MR JUSTICE CHAPMAN.
Hm, — In going through many old letters and papers i found (he enclosed note from .Mr l-'redk. <hupmnn (as he was) in IEO2. Since it was written and until recently Mr Chapman has been a .Judge of the Supreme Court. The letter shows the interest which he took in all matters that promoted the interests of the dominion, particularly of Dunedin. This note was the means of my drawing the attention of the then city engineer to the Diesel engine, with the result that the Drainage Hoard at once secured two engines which are still in use.—l am, etc.., .Jam ns A. Park. Dear Mr Mayor,—-The engine about which 1 was told something was by Deissel or some similar German name. It is a new oil engine worked on a new principle at a very low cost —1 undcrslond £3 per h.p per an. It is said to he the cheapest generating power now in use. This assertion may be worth investigating. My informant is Mr ('niton. The Inel is crude petroleum.—l am, clc., Frkdk. Chapman. Dunedin, November 20, 1902.
