“There ought to be some place where these men could be put and made to work for the support of their families.” declared Mr 0. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., at the .Police Court at Wellington when, during the hearing- of a maintenance case, it transpired that of Alban Samuel Dring’s family of 10 children nine had been committed to o receiving home through lack of parental support. The defendant declared he had “stuck to” his family right through. “Quito so.” said Sub-inspector Cameron. 4 You ‘stuck to’ them right through, but you didn’t do anything for them. I don’t suggest you ran away, you haven’t got enough energy to do that. It is no good trying to got blood out of a stone, yoni 1 Wor ship,” concluded the sub-inspector. “This man has no money. The tile shows tposition, and he has been an absolute waster.” The defendant’s application for « remission of his arrears (totalling over £SO) and cancellation of the order was refused. The importance to which the pork exporting industry of New Zealand might attain if actively carried on was stressed by Mr K. W, florringe, Director of Swine Husbandry, at a lecture given at the Central Development Farm (states the Levin Chronicle). The value of the bacon, pork, and pork products imported into the United Kingdom last year was. he staled, £55.000,000. Of this amount New Zealand contributed only £27,000, hut as the quality of the New Zealand product was admitted on the London market to be second to none imported into the country, so that the demand was assured, there was no reason why this should not be increased very considerably, and provide a very strong secondary industry to the small farmer of Now Zealand. The majority of people are probably unaware that the colouring of some birds’ plumage is not absolutely permanent. This interesting fact was mentioned by Professor Johnson in his address on “Colour in Nature” at Auckland on Monday. After a prolonged bath, or after a heavy deluge of rain, he said, the pink colouring on a parrot's bead often “ran,” and the feathers would look very washed out and bedraggled for some time afterwards (reports the Now r Zealand Herald). This washing out of colour often produced some very queer effects, continued the lecturer, who greatly amused his audience by his suggestion a-s to the awkward results that would ensue if human hair suffered the same msability as that of bird plumage when exposed to over-long immersion or to a shower of rain. In one voyage an American liner .carried eight stowaways, one of whom confessed that it was his eighth stolen trip across the Atlantic.
