ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

The following table shows the relative positions of the teams engaged in the Senior Grade: — ,

FIRST GRADE. SEACLIFF v. TAIERI. More spectators than usual attended at Culling Park, when Seacliff made their second appearance on a local ground this season. Owing to the Taieri team being short, of a full team, the game was late in starting, consequently only half-hour spells were played, to enable the Hospital players to return by train leaving shortly after 4 o’clock. M‘Cloy and Walker failed to pat in an appearance for Taieri. and H. Aspinall, a local player of some years back, and a junior filled the vacancies. The game was not. a brilliant one, the spoiling play of the Taieri team being a match for their more clever opponents, who. however, showed only occasional glimpses of good play for which they are noted. Taieri kicked off. and Simmons led Sea cliff in a couple, of attacks without, result. Wallace cleared, and Taieri forwards returned play to the other end. M’Lean being prominent, but offside nullified the effort. The greasy state of the ground was not conducive to good football, and the Seacliff forwards’ cleverness with the ball was unavailing against the dash of the opposing defence. D. Hanlin, in goal, dealt safely with a couple of shots by Waugh and W Hanlin, and Jeffrey and M’Lean. well backed up by Aspinall, penetrated through to Seaciiffs goal, where M’Lean’s header struck the upright and post outside. Play was held up for a time through an iniury to MTntosh, who received _ the ball in the face, and. on resuming, G. Anderso sent well down to M’Dougall, who passed on to Hooper, the latter failing with his shot. Following a throw in Waugh obtained and placed to Hooper, who passed on to Simmons, and this player went round the defence and scored with a fine shot. Seacliff 1. Taieri 0. Just prior to half time Taieri were attacking, and M’Uaw’s attempt at goal wont wide. Resuming, Taieri continued to upset Soacliff’s plav, and MTntosh early had a shot, which Rivers cleared. A corner kick also proved rosultless, and M’Dougall was responsible for placing Seacliff on the attack. Dey, in an effort to clear from Simmons’s kick, kicked back to his goalie. and narrowly sent the ball through, but Hanlin made a great save. Succeeding clay, apart from one or two breakaways by the Taieri forwards, was chiefly in favour of Seacliff, but the sound defence of Aspinall, Dey, Wallace, and D. Hanlin kept the attacks at bay. Hanlin. in goal, was in great form, saving repeated!". Twice Taieri missed scoring by the narrowest of margins. Jeffrey finished a nice run with a fine centre, and Rive hist managed to heat Prondfoot for the ball and clear. On the second occasion, as the result of good work by Aspinall, Prondfoot, and M’Lean, Rivers fumbled the' ball and M’Lean second attempt to put through struck Rivers and went outside. Hooper, who, throughout h«d played rather close to offside, •broke through, but fouled the ball before sending it into the net. Tor no apparent reason, however, the referee awarded a pentalty kick to Seacliff, and «. great cheer wont up a s the Taieri custodian deftly deflector] the ball over the bar. Aspinall and Wallace were showing great defensive plav in breaking up the opposition’s forward movements, but eveuturdlv Simmons kicked well down past the defence, and Iloopcr, by quick following up. gave Han(in, in goal, no chance. Seacliff continued to hold, the advantage until the call of time. Mr Fogarty was referee. Result : Seacliff 2 goals. Taieri Nil. MAORI HILL v. NORTHERN. These teams met on the Clear for the first time this season, the game resulting in a draw. For the first quarter of an hour Maori Hill were a goal up. but in spite of a keen defence by the Hillmen Northern were leading by a goal until well on in the second spell, and it was only by the aid of a penalty that Maori Hill drew level. It really would have been something of a tragedy had Hill lost, for they had as much of the game as Northern. Not always did the defensive methods of the Northern men appeal to the onlookers, but taking into consideration the slippery turf and several water holes which adorned the playing area a good game resulted. Balk scored for the Hill from a penalty during the first 10 minutes, but from a free kick Ruddiman equalised shortly after. Both sides were attacking and Kennedy, who deputised for Currie, for Hill, and Braham for Northern, were frequently called upon to clear. Cherry was prominent for Northern and from a smart bout of passing beat Kennedy with a shot into the comer of the net. Maori Hill should have levelled the score up shortly afterwards from a foul inside the area, but M’C'ormack shot over the bar. Mackle was within an ace of scoring but his shot hit the bar and Kennedy, after a neat piece of juggling with the ball, cleared his line. M’Cormack put across several good centres for Hill, but the inside men failed to control the ball on the slippery turf. Half-time: Northern 2, Maori Hill 1. Keen play was the order of the second half, both teams striving for a goal. M’Cornmck. on the Hill left, was again prominent, and hit the crossbar with a fine cross shot from the wing. Kennedy saved well from DrydeU, jun., but was lucky to clear a stinging shot from Morrison. A corner for Hill was nicely cleared by Coates, and Walker, obtaining possession, should have scored but dallied with the ball a few yarefe out, M’Pherson clearing. Balk came into the centre and from a pass by Morris would have scored, but was fouled in the penalty area. Balk made no mistake with the spot kick. Maori Hill 2, Northern 2. Both sides tried strenuously for the winning goal, but both defences were sure. Mr Moorwood controlled the game, which ended■ Northern 2 goals. Maori Hill 2 goals. OLD BOYS v. SOUTHERN. Southern met Old Boys on the Oval, which was in a sodden condition after the recent rain. Old Boys won the toss and immediately Southern set up a strong attack which Imrio cleared. Following even [day, Old Boys became dangerous and Duncan, securing possession, beat Donaldson and scored with a beautiful shot. Subsequent play was of a ragged nature, and a long shot essayed by Fraser (Old Boys) was misjudged by the Southern goalie and the spell ended with the score in favour of Old Boys, 2-0, Changing over, play in tho second half was fairly even throughout. A change of positions in the Southern team proved beneficial to their ’play, and Donaldson, who had taken up the centre-forward position, scored a good goal and reduced the lead. The defence of Old Boys proved equal to tho further attacks of the Red and Blacks and the game, controlled by Mr R. Brown, ended: Old Boys ' 2 goals Southern 1 goal KAITAN GAT A v. MORNINGTON. Kaitangata opposed Mornington on tho latter’s ground, and won after a fairly evenly-contested game. Skilful play was out of the question owing to tho state of tho ground. The first piece of play worth’A of nolo was the pretty, combined efforts of tho Kaitangata men, several of whom carried the ball well npficld. Prescott ended tho attack by sending in a low shot which passed outside. For a while Kaitangata had tho advantage, the visitors heading tho leather dangerously near to the Mornington goal. Tho home team attacked, and took tho ball past halfway, L. Johnston essaying two shots without success. A shot by Dickel was blocked, Watt causing tho ball to go over the cross-bar, thus spoiling an almost certain score for his side. A shot which went close was fisted out and Kaitangata forced a corner Mornington headed clear, and then ensued a scramble at the Kaitaugata goal. Dickson, inside right for Mornington, was playing a great game. Some scraggy play onsoied, and tho first spell ended without a score. The ball went up and down the field at a fast pace in the second half. Watt, Uatto, and Dit'kel (centre forward) were playing well for Mornington. Kaitangata’s outside left shot for goal, but the opposing goalkeeper was safe. Tho attacks of tho Blacks took them to tho Mornington goal, and ono of tho forwards tried a shot. The goalie held: but he was behind the line. Mr Crawford was referee. Final: Kaitangata 1 Mornington ■*'’ 0 SECOND GRADE. Old Boys 7 goals defeated Northern 2 goals. Southern won by default against Maori Hill. Technical College Old Boys won by default against Taieri.

(Received June 15. at 6.5 p.m.) At Association football in the second test match Canada defeated Australia by one goal to nil after a hard and fast but unattractive game. The visitors changed their tactics, relying on robust rather than on scientific play.. There were many breaches of the rules on both sides, but the Canadians were the principal offenders. The Australians gave a masterful display of the open game, but were defeated at the critical test by the visitors’ strength in defence.
