CONFERENCE IN AUCKLAND TRADE WITH THE EAST. DAYLIGHT SAYING FAVOURED. (Pee United Press Association.) AUCKLAND. June 12. The delegates to the Conference of the Industrial Corporation of New Zealand were accorded' a civic welcome in the Town Hall this morning by Mr Bailden, Deputy Mayor. On the motion of Mr Jenkins (Christchurch) the conference agreed that a deputation wait on the Prime Minister to emphasise the importance of trade with the East and to urge him to assist in promoting a mission representing the various interests. The delegates agreed to recommend to the various associations to subscribe the travelling expenses of a representative of the manufacturers to be appointed by the Industrial Corporation. Mr L. R. - Partridge (Wellington) brought up the question of the method of purchase of supplies by shipping companies trading to New Zealand, their present policy being to buy all requirements in Great Britain. He moved—“ That companies be requested to buy a fair proportion of the supplies required for the homeward voyage from New Zealand manufacturers.’’ The motion was carried the A. and P. Associations to be asked to co-operate. Mr Allum moved—'“That the attention of the Government be directed to the anomalous and unfair position arising from the fact that goods can be declared ot British origin provided the cost of production is not less than 25 per cent. British, and we therefore request that the raw materials to be used by New Zealand manufacturers shall be duty free. In regard to the first point, we suggest that not less than 75 per cent, of the cost of production shall be British instead of the present 25 per cent.’’ The motion in favour of the. 75 per cent, was carried unanimously, and the remainder was amended to read “that the conference requests that the duty on all raw materials used by New Zealand manufacturers he remitted so long as such raw materials are not produced in New Zealand.” Mr J. W. Collins (Secretary of Industries and Commerce) delivered an address on the fostering of industries. ' He urged the need for systematic propaganda in the interests of New Zealand industries. The conference carried a resolution favouring the apolioation of a daylight saving scheme all the year round, but affirming that in the first place the scheme should be applied to the summer months only.
