ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH.

ORGAN RENOVATION FUND CONCERT. In spite of the inclemency of the weather there was a fairly large attendance m Burns Hull lust night, when the St. Andrew’s Church Choir and the Dunedin Lyric Chib Choir gave an enjoyable concert, the procccds o£ which are to lie devoted to the St. Andrew’s Church organ renovation fund. Judging by tho attendance the fund should ha considerably augmented as the result ol the concert, which was very successful. The opening item whs the part sung from “The Soldiers’ Chorus” in “Faust" (Gounod), .met the choir gave a splendid interpretation of this stirring composition. Misa Mildrea Gillums wa.s applauded enthusiastically for her hinging of'the love lyric “Adah, bo With us" (Woodforde FindenJ, and she gave ■in enually pleasing rendering of the beautiful Ave Maria" (Gounod)'. Mr P. Falmer executed a ’cello solo, “Serenade Eapagnole. , (Gluzounov) with skill, and he was rewarded with an encore. Miss Agnes Guy sang “Sing, Joyous Bird” (Montague Phillips) ' very acceptably, she also was encored, Mr L. A. North, w k° fine baritone, was to very great advantage in “The Diver ’ (M .Millan) and in response to very hearty applause he ’san" a little French song entitled “Ohstination” (H. de Fontenaiiles), _ which was equally well received. Mrs Stanlet Foote gave a nice rendering of tho waltz song “Carissma,” and she was obliged to sing again. Mr S. IT. Osborn proved to he a reciter of no mean' ability, and both lus items were encored. Miss Mad go Yates was equally successful in tho musical monologue “The Song of ,the ’Traffic Control,” and m the second halt of tho programme her humorous recitation “The Ghost Story,” was very amusing. The second half of the programme commenced with the part song “The Silent Tide” by the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Choir. Under the baton of Mr J. Leech the part song was very nicely rendered, and as the voices were well balanced, and showed evidence of careful training, the whole effect was very pleasing. Mr John Leech’s delightful light tenor was particularly effective in’ the “Flower Song” from “Carmen” (Bizet), and he was enthusiastically encored. Mrs Stanley Foote wa® also decidedly successful in the well-known operatic aria “One Fine Day,” from “Madame Butterfly" (PuceJni), and she via® loudly applauded, and favoured the audience with an encore. Mr Walter Mitchell’s rendering of ‘‘Elegy’' (Maascpet) was enhanced by ’cello obligato by Mr Palmer, and he, also had to sing again. Mr Palmer then gave as a solo, “Hiciliana," from “Cavelleria Rusticana. (Mascagni), and ho was rewarded with wellmerited applause. The final number was the part song “Good Niaht, Farewell” (Garrett). Misses Flora Williameon and Agnes Guy rendered the. solo parts very succesafullv, and the choir also ably supported the eoloiels. Much of the succe«s of the concert was due to the efforts of Mr J. Leech, who spared no efforts to make it a success. Mrs J. Txierh and Mies Ruby Hudson, and Messrs R. D. Nimmo and P. Service shared the honours as accompanists.
