FANCIERS’ SHOW.

POULTRY, . PIGEONS, CANARIES, DOGS. MANY EXCELLENT EXHIBITS. THE OPENING DAY. The annual show of the Dunedin Fanciers’ Chib opened in the Brydone Hall yesterday. Fine weather in the morning turned to a. .cold rain storm in the afternoon, and this considerably affected the attendance, though of course it did not interfere with the display of exhibits. The Fanciers’ Club includes a, wide range of animals in the scope of its activities, and its show is divided into classes for poultry, pigeons, canaries, dogs, cats, and children's pets. In the poultry section the fancy classes are not as strong as they have been in pa.it years, hut the utility section has attracted a very good entry. Leghorns arc particularly strong, and Wyandottes, Orpingtons, and Rhode Island Reals are well represented. A good entry has also been received in the bantam section. The fancy pigeons showed a falling off in comparison with previous years, but an excellent entry lias been received in the horning pigeons classes, and in most of the classes competition has been very keen. The total of 260 racing pigeons is a splendid one, and the ,judges are firmly of opinion that the quality of the birds has never before been equalled at this show. Among them there are several of notable merit, A record entry has been received in the canary section, and there is good competition in nearly every class. The, cats and children's pets section, always an attractive feature of the show, has again attracted good entries. They will fco exhibited to-day, when there will be a good show of Persian -ond short-haired cats, rabbits, and other children's pets. The dog section is also very satisfactory, speaking generally, apd altogether 138 dogs have been benched. Cocker spaniels form the strongest class in the section, both black and coloured being we!) represented. The terriers were not what they used to he a few years ago, cither in number or in 'quality. There were about four outstanding dogs, and the others were only ordinary. Competition was poor except in the wire-liairej section. Eight or ten years ago it was common to have a dozen animals m a class. Altogether, the number of exhibits in the show is in tho vicinity of 1200—a very satisfactory total. Dogs, on the whole, were well up to Ihoso of past years. The outstanding feature was the cocker spaniels, a splendid specimen being benched by Dr M’Killop, the imported dog Fulner Dan, •which was shown in excellent condition. A large number of tho Dunedin dogs were out of condition through being too fat and thus spoiling their typical outline. Irish setters were a fine class, one being especially notable, and tho best-conditioned dog in tho allow. The English setters were not quite up to the Irish, though there were some good dogs among them. There was only ono deerhound, a fine dog. but a broken to© counted against him. The Gordon setter breed seems to be very scarce in the dominion, and only one of these was benened. Black retrievers were fairly prominent, and much better than are usually seen on the benches in the South Island. There was on e splendid dog, and one of the bitches — an excellent-coated one—appears as though she would make a really good animal wtien matured. The only rough-coated collie shown was not quite up to standard. Several exhibits shown as field dogs, although quite good dogs, were not in accordance with the field spaniel standard. The field spaniel is a short-legged dog, with a long body. Several good working gun dogs wer© benched. Bulldogs made a good class, their heads in particular deserving commendation. The Pomeranians were fairly good, though on© or two were somewhat deficient in coat. There were fair classes for those of any colour, some of them showing plenty of character. Thor© were 282 entries in the canary section—a number which has not been approached for several years back—and there were a number of splendid typical birds. ’Hie Norwich and Yorkshire classes were particularly fine exhibits, and showed remarkably few blemishes. 1 he section as a whole compared very favourably with the display in previous years. The utility white Leghorns were a very fin© class and showed distinct improvement. The judges spoke very favourably also of the utility Orpingtons, and there were some splendid specimens of white Wyandottes, One of them was in the running for the honour of best bird an the show, but was ineligible as its owner as not member of the Utility Poultry Club. This bird was imported last year from Lord Dewar. The silver Wyandotte millet made a very fine class, and the Minorca* were tho best of that typo seen hero for years. The Rhode Island reds, an exceedingly difficult type to breed, were only fair. Tho English and utility ducks were distinctly good. There was a considerable increase in the ..entries tor bantams, the- number reaching between 70 and 80, and the birds, on the ■whole, were fine specimens. The Sebright pullet wa s perhaps the best, bird on view, and there were some good specimens among the rosecornb classes. ’i ho show, which was visited by large numbers last night, despite the weather, will ho open again to-day and to-morrow from 9 a.m. till 10 p.m. Gats and children’s pots will l>e judged to-day.
