CITY POLICE COURT.

Thfbsday, June 12. (Before Mr .T. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) Admitted to Probation,t—A young woman, wlio pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a dress, valued at £3, the property of Winifred M. Miller, and who was remanded, pending inquiries as to her previous character, came up for sentence.-Chief-detective Lewis said nothing had been found against accused, except that she kept late hours and was unfit for, work tho next day. The dress had been returned. He understood that Ensign Coombs had procured a position for accused, but that if her name were published it would spoil her chances,—Ensign ■ Ccombs asked that the name be not published, and she was sure the accused would do well in the position offered her. —The Magistrate said that in view of what had been said on her behalf, he would admit accused to probation for 12 months. He would also make an order prohibiting the publication of her name. Theft of Money.—A pica of guilty was entered by Margaret Cmnming, who was charged with stealing the sum of £l. the property of Percival Harry Moodv.—Chiefdetective Lewis said accused had been employed as a waitress at a tea-room during Show Week. On the night the _ money was taken, and after the other waitresses had none, accused was approached by a man who asked for change oi a£l note. She went to the till and gave the required change, but kept the £1 note. When interviewed by Detective Hart she admitted the offence. Tho money had been recovered. Accused had appeared voluntarily, and as the police had not had time to find out anything regarding her previous behaviour in other positions, he would ask for a remand.—Tho Magistrate granted a, remand until to-morrow, and accused was released. Remand Granted.—Joseph Clarke was charred with being found drunk while in charge of a motor car, and further w'ith unlawfully resisting a constable in the execution of ids duty.—Senior-sergeant Mathie--Bon su’d tlrat Mr Hanlon was appearing for accused, but as he was out of town he had asked for a remand. Tho police were ready tn go on, but would agree to a remand. — The Magistrate remanded accused until Friday, June 27. Bail was allowed accused in £2O, and one surety of £2O.
