Mcs'srs C. B. Smith and E. A. Rosevear, who attended the recent Rod Cross Society's Conference in Auckland, returned to Dunedin last night. Messrs J. M'Crac (president), and A. C. Laing (secretary), wtio represented the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association at the recent, annual conference in Christchurch of tho Dominion Association, returned by the express last night, Mr H. R. Duncan w’as re-elected chairman of the Nelson Harbour Board (says a Press Association message). Our London correspondent reports that Dr A. H. Kirker (Auckland) has been appointed resident medical officer to the Maicia Vale Hospital for Epilepsy, Paralysis, and other nervous disorders. Mr P. Hockley, booth Island manager of Gordon and Gotch (Ltd.), is at present on a business trip to Dunedin. Mr George Gould has been elected chairman of the Canterbury Jockey Club (says a Christchurch Press Association telegram), and Messrs Grigg and G. Gould have been appointed, the club’s delegates to the New’ Zealand Racing Conference. Dr Cyril A. King, late of Christchurch Hospital, and Dr Alan E. Park, late of Wellington Hospital, have obtained the degree of F.R.C.S., London Both Dr King and Dr Park qualified at the Otago Medical School. There are a great many old residents in New Zealand (writes our London correspondent) who will be interested to hear that Mrs Hobhouse, widow of Bishop Hobhouse (formerly of Nelson) celebrated her onehundicdth birthday at Wells, Somerset, on May o. After leaving Nelson, Bishop Ilobhouso was assistant bishop of Lichfield. Mr J. J. fcjpiers, who has been mine host at the Kurow Hotel for many years, has decided to retire, and will leave Kurow at the end of the week for Dunedin, where he intends to reside for a while. Sir Frederick Chapman, who retired from the Supreme Court bench in 1921, but temporarily resumed duty the same year, has now definitely retired (says a Wellington Press Association telegram). Mr J. Wyn Irwin. Ax. A., F.R.C.S., master in cnarge of the secondary deportment of the Normal District High School Reports a Christchurch Press Association telegram), has received word of tus appointment as inspector of schools with headcuarters at Wellington. Mr and Mrs Andrew Balneavcs (Mataura) and Miss Balneaves spent only two days in Ixondon before going through to Scotland. They are now in Forfarsitire (writes orur London correspondent on May 6), staying at Balquhadlie, Mr Balneaves s birtnpiace, where his brother and younger sister manage a farm. After touring Scotland the travellers will return to London and revisit the Exhibition. They liavo booked return passages by the Orvieto, sailing from London on July 19 Yesterday the house flag of Briscoe amt Co. was at hajf-mast owing to the dearh of Mr Robert Hemingway, the firm’s packer, who died on Sunday after 13 weeks’ illness. Mr Hemingway, who had been connected with the linn tor several year’s, was much respected. Professor G S. Peren, who is to occupy the lecently-oreated chair ot agriculture at Victoria College, arrived by the Athenio (says a Wellington Press Association telegram). He is a graduate of the Ontario agricultural ’College. Toronto, lie states that agricultural education is being steadily developed in England. Return passages have been booked by the Osterley, which will bo joined at Naples on December 14, after a tour in France, Switzerland, and Italy. ’ ' Prior to her departure for Pembroke, where she has been promoted to the position of ostmistress, Mrs M' Leo J was tendered a farewell by superintendents and teachers of Knox Church Sunday School. Speaking on behalf of the session, the Rev. Tul loch Yuillo expressed great, regret at Mrs M’Leod’s departure, and referred to her long and faithful service. Her departure was a loss to the Sunday schools of Dunedin, she having been a member of the Council of the Sunday Schools’ Union of Dunedin. Mr Gordon Sunday spoke on behalf of the Knox Church Youth Committee. Mr MCrae, the superintendent of the Sunday school, spoke of Mrs M'Leod’s valuable services and her enthusiasm in her work. Mr David Todd, on behalf of the superintendents of departments and tile teachers, presented Mrs M‘Leod with a solid- leather suitcase. Mrs M'Leod- will relinquish her duties at St. Kiida on Saturday morning and will leave for Pembroke on Monday. the Rev. D. K. Fisher (Lumsdon), who is primarily on a holiday visit to the Mother Country, is at present in his native town of Montrose. He will attend the General Assemblies of the Presbyterian Churches of Scotland, to lie held in Edinburgh this month (reports our London correspondent writing on May 6). For those gatherings and for other courts of these churches ho carries with him the usual commission from the New Zealand Church sigiied by the Clerk and the Moderator of Assembly—the Rev. J. H. M'Kenzie and Dr James Gumming. In June he expects to be in Glasgow to attend the sittings of the World's Sunday School Convention, for which he is one of the New Zealand’s representative delegates. Mr Fisher hopes to go to France shortly after to visit the grave of one of the two sons who were lost in the war. He has booked his return passsge by the Rotorua, due to leave Southampton on August 14, but before then he expects to see a good deal more of the Mother Country and of Ireland. He travelled to England by the last trip of the Remuera, and he remarks: “My stay on beard this ship was in a palace compared with my voyage out to New Zealand via Capetown 33 years ago, when, as on this occasion., I travelled third-class and ex perioncod then, as on this trip, the best attention available under the given conditions.”
