AX ENGINEER’S HEROISM. TO THIS EDITOR. Sib, —Reading in your issue of 271 h ulto. of the heroism of Mr N. D. Hood (late chief surveyor of ships for New Zealand) at me launch of the Daphne on the Clyde in 1682, recalls to memory the fire in Ross’s Buildings, Octagon, in September, 1879 (when 12 lives were lost), and the heroic part played by Mr Peter Grant, another of our engineer surveyors. who also retired from the Government service the other day. This genial and most unobtrusive gentleman, who was barely out of his teens at the time, was largely instrumental in limiting the number of fatalities and injuries at that fire.—l am, etc., Jack. Dunedin. April 1.
