SIR CHARLES STANFORD, COMPOSER. Pm* A*«oei*tion —Br TeVffffsph—Ooprriefcl LONDON, March 50. The death is announced of Sir Charles Stanford. —A. and N.Z. Cable. Sir Charles Stanford, the well-known English composer, was born at Dublin, m 1852. After receiving his education privately and at Cambridge, he studied music at Leipsig under Reinacke, and at Berlin under Kiel. From 1872 to 1895 he was organist of Trinity College, Cambridge and conductor of the Cambridge Musical Union. His talents as a conductor soon placed him in the forefront of British musicians and many of his works have been produced on the London stage as well as on the Continent and in the colonies. Sis cantatas, song cycles, and compositions for the organ enjoy a wide popularity. As a. producer of operas and concerts on the Continent he was notably successful, and during his 10 years’ conductorship of the Leeds Festival he made this one of the outstanding musical events in the kingdom. At the time of his death Sir Charles Stanford was Professor of Music at Cambridge University, and Professor of Composition and Orchestral Playing in the Royal College of Music.
