ST. KILDA BOROUGH COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council, held last night, was attended by the Mayor (Mr C. Todd), and Crs 11. Telfer, K. Longworth, J. Adam, J. Beatlie, li. Hall, H. H. Leary, J. Fleming, A. Edgar, and A. Kilpatrick. Mr A. Griffin, assistant town clerk, tendered his resignation, as be was leaving the district. -The Mayor said that Mr Griffin had served the council faithfully for three years, and the council regretted that'ft was losing the services of a man who had such a good grasp of borough affairs.—Crs Longworth and Kilpatrick also expressed their appreciation of Mr Griffin’s services.—The resignation was accepted with regret. A 'motion by the Works and Finance Committee recommending the council to approve of a schedule of works amounting to approximately £3OOO for the ensuing year was deferred till the next meeting. Following the requisite notice, Cr Leary moved, Cr Edgar seconding, that the resolution of the St. Kilda Borough Council of August 14, 1917—“ That in future the council and committee meetings Ins held on Mondayo" be rescinded. —Cr Leary said that it was a purely impersonal matter to him whether the meetings were held on the Monday or the Tuesday nights, but the point at issue was that Cr Dove, the council's representative on the Drainage Board, was debased from attending the council meetings, as he had to bn present at the Drainage Board, which met on the same nights.—lt was decided to hold the matter over till tho nckt council meeting, the Mayor to see whether it would be possible for the Drainage Board to change its night of meeting as the St. Kilda Council found that the Monday night was the only one when all the councillors could be present. The Rev. John Miller wrote on behalf of the St. Clair Presbyterian Church Kirk Session and congregation inviting the Mayor and councillors to attend the Anzac Day service, to he held at the St. Clair Presbyterian Church at 6.30 p.m.—lt was decided to accept the invitation. In his report on the work carried out during the year, tho borough foreman stated that 6782 yards of footpath had been. attended to, C-l casks of tar, and 60 and a-half toads of sand being used in the operation. The weather had been favourable, and tho footpaths were in splendid order. Ninety thiir loads of ashes had been spread on footpaths, either on newly-formed oaths or in repairing old ones. In West avenue, Waterloo and Driver streets and several others grass had been cleared from the melee and regrading carried out. The grass in all the streets had been cut twice, and Culling Park had been kept in good order. Everything was working well in the sanitary department, which the report described as “the beet service in New Zealand.” A start had been made to asphalt the road®. A largo number of houses had been built, and numerous drains installed. Electric roles had been removed where necessary. There had been a large Mailer of water-bursts, and the foreman suggested that the council make a small charge for repairing water services and burst pipes on footpaths. All the street channels bad been "irraened” twice, and cleaned up at intervals. Altogether it had h-e.n a very heavy year, but the work had been well carried out by a very efficient staff. —Tha report wa» adopted.
