CITY POLICE COURT.

Saturday, March 29. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) Theft of Shoes.—Anton Middendorf was charged with stealing a pair of ladies’ suede shoos, valued at 26s sd, I,ho property of the New Zealand Clothing Factory.—Mr B. S. Irwin appeared for accused and pleaded guilty.—Chief-detective I/Cwis stated that accused went into the New Zealand Clothing Factory’s shop on Friday and purchased a pair of boots. When he left the shop an assistant suspected that ho had taken a pair of shoes and he followed the hum to f house. Detective Farqiiha.rson, was com-

municated with, and he went to the house and interviewed accused, who denied taking the shoes. The detective searched the house and found the shoes hidden under some wood. Accused had been convicted before, of breaches of his prohibition order and for drunkenness.--Mr Irwin stated that acciisd was a fisherman residing at Port Chalmers. and was a widower with an adult family. The only excuse he could offer was that accused was under the influence of liquor, and asked that the magistrate deal leniently with him.—The Magistrate, in imposing a fine of £6 (costs ss), in default one month's imprisonment, ordered accused to fake out a prohibition order against himself. A week was allowed in which to pay the fine.

JUVENILE COURT. Precocious Children. —The mother of a girl aged 15 years asked that her .-daughter ho committed to an Industrial Horne as-she was beyond control. —The police evidence was to the effect that the girl was depraved in her habits, and was quite beyond the control of her mother.—The Magistrate committed the girl to the Caversham Industrial School, and ordered that she bo kept under medical supervision. -The second ease was that of a girl aged eight years, who was addicted to thieving and bad behaviour. She, was also beyond the control of her parents. —Tire police staled that the girl had stolen hats from schools, and was often on the streets until late at night.— The Magistrate committed the child to the St. Vincent.
