UNION COMPANY’S NEW MOTOR SHIP. FURTHER DETAILS FROM BUILDERS [From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, March 30. Further details have just been received by tli© Union Steam Ship Company of the quadruple-screw motor ship Aorangi, which the Fairfield Shipbuilding Company is constructing at Glasgow. When completed this vessel will be the largest and finest of the Union Company’s fleet, and will be employed in the service between Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. The principal dimensions of the new liner are: —Length over all, 600 ft; length b.p., 570 ft; breadth, moulded, at upper deck 72ft, and increased to 74ft at the promenade deck and 77ft at the boat deck; and having a depth of 64ft to the boat deck. The vessel has been designed for a sea speed of 18 knots. The main propelling machinery will consist of four reversible single-acting and two cycle Fairfield SulzerDiescl engines, each set having six cylinders 27jin in diameter and 39in stroke. Four electric generators, driven by a Sulzer fourcylinder and two cycle Diesel engines are to be installed. The steam for heating and for driving the auxiliary machinery is to be provided by two single-ended cylindrical boilers burning dil fuel, with natural draught. While principally designed for passengers, this vessel will carry a considerable amount of cargo, the cargo being worked from eightholds by 16 silent working winches. A large part of the hold space will bo fitted to take refrigerated cargo— frozen meat, butter, cneese, or fruit. The passenger accommodation of tire vessel is very extensive, and there will be spaciousness, elegance, and luxuriousness in every direction. This applied not only to the first but in due degree to the second and third classes, all the fittings being of the best and latest improved type of their respective classes. Un the shelter and promenade decks a considerable number of one and two-berth cabins are fitted with .bedsteads instead of the ordinary ship’s berth. The first-class dining saloon is a spacious apartment, a feature of which is that the tables are all arranged for small numbers. The first-class lounge, finished in Louis XVI style, is on the promenade deck, two deeks above the dining saloon, and is arranged in small bays and cosy corners, while the writing room is situated at the fore end of the first-class accommodation on the promenade deck, and has been designed specially for the comfort of passengers desiring to pass the time in quiet either reading or writing, The music room at the fore end of the promenade deck is a palatial place, having lofty ceilings and a large dorr|e overhead. The verandah cafe, an elaborate place, is arranged on the same deck abaft the smokeroom with suitable weather screen partitions decorated neatly with trellis work plied with games and toys. A day nursery for the children has been fitted up with good accommodation for the nurses and children. This room is to be decorated with interesting nictures and supplied with games ami toys. Provision for a well-equipped gymnasium has also boon made on the boat deck.
