Chile is situated on the slopes of the Chile volcano, to the eruption of which the present disaster is attributed. The road from Cumbal to Ipiales is obstructed by great landslides. The full extent of the earthquake is not known. Numerpusvsurrounding villages are believed to be badly damaged. Many people are homeless, and lack food and shelter. Shocks continue mildly. Heavy shocks wore felt along the southern frontier,, the Colombia village of Carlosama being destroyed, and Paste, Ipiales, Turquerres, and* Ibarra, in the direct line of the tremors, being badly shaken. Serious damage was done at Ipiales. The volcanoes of Cumbal and Chile continue in active eruption.—A. and is.Z. Cable.
