OWAKA SHOW.

& SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION. The sixteenth annual summer show of the Owaka A. and P. Society was held at Owaka on Friday, and there was a large attendance of the general public, £53 10a being taken at the gates. The trains from Ba.loi.utha and Macleiman were well patronised, and motor cars from Balclutha and the surrounding districts conveyed large numbers of patrons. The Balclutha Pipe Band was in attendance in full strength, and its playing throughout the day contributed in no small measure to the entertainment cf patrons, the applause which greeted the conclusion of the playing of many of the selections showing that the efforts of the members and their popular pipe-major (Mr E. Gold) wore duly appreciated. A strong north-west gale blew all day, but the grounds for the roost part were well sheltered by a belt of trees, so that patrons suffered little discomfort or inconvenience. Several side-shows were in evidence, and as has been the case at practically all the agricultural shows in Otago and Southland this season, they appeared to do jjood business. An energetic band of marshals and stewards kept tilings moving, ■with the result that the judging was got through expeditiously. Some interesting competitions were on the programme, and these were watched with keen interest. Generally speaking, the quality cl the stock was good, but poor-conditioned animals were in evidence, especially in the cattle section, and in not a few cases little, if any. attention had been given to the preparation of the exhioits for the show. 3f tile Owaka show is to continue to flourish attention will have to be paid to these matters, as it is no advertisement to a district which is noted for its productiveness to place low-conditioned and unprepared stock on exhibition. On the other hand, there were some stock forward which wore quite a credit to the exhibitors. Some were even mud fat, and were well brought out. In this connection it must not bo inferred that too high condition is to be commended, but it is mentioned to show that the district is by no means a povertystricken one, and is quite capable of producing stock in a condition fitted for the show ring. The Shorthorn cattle section, which was judged by Mr D. Bryce {Lovell’s Elat), was probably the best section in the straw. The champion bull, strange to relate, was not exhibited in any class, but arrived on the scene in time to coke into the ring when the aspirants for championship honours were paraded. He was owned by Mr J. D. Calder, and well deserved the honour accorded him. The championship in the female section went to a particularly fine cow shown by Mr G. S, Wilson (Gletiomaru), who showed other nice cows. Ayrsbires were not numerous, but some goodquality animals were brought before Mr J. Campbell (TahaJtopaf), -who allotted the awards. Only one bull was forwarded, a two-year-old belonging to Mr C. Jewell (Purckireki), and he was awarded a championship certificate. Mr J. Duley, of Owaka Valley, brought forward some good cows and heifers, and conquered all' competitors. His champion cow was one which ■would be hard to beat at a show of greater pretensions than Owaka. This cow also gained the prize for the best cow in the dairy section. Mr J. Campbell and Mr Bryce judged the Jersey section, and described is'as good. The championship in bulls went to a three-year-old bull shown by Messrs Pullar and M‘Dowa.ll (Ratanui). He was reserve champion at Owaka last year, and has been champion at Chitha show’ for two years in succession. Three specially good cows came forward in the aged cow class, the red ticket going to a nice type of Jersey belonging to Mr^w. J. Burgess (Tarara). Messrs Rao Bros, three-year-old heifer, which gained the red ticket, was a good specimen of the breed, and m the opinion cf Mr Bryce w - aa equal to anything shown in this section at Invercargill. Friesians were not a strong section, either in point of quality or of numbers. Many of them were low-conditioned, and in consequence appeared to be deficient in constitution. The dairy cattle section attracted seme good useful cows and heifers, Mr J. Duley, of Owaka Valley, being the most successful exhibitor. His Ayrshire ©ow—exhibited in the class for dairy cow or heifer, any breed—was a fane type of milker, and gained the shield ana gold medal given by the Chitha Dairy ComPa Sheep were not a strong section, although some good individual animals were shown. ■Without doubt, the feature of the exhibition of- sheep was the fat lambs forwarded by Mr E Bradfield, of Owaka Valley. In the class for three fat lambs, any breed or cross, Mr Bradfield showed animals the equal of which in point of weight and quality have not been ceon at any show in Otago and Southland this year. They were .Border Leicester crosses. The dressed weight of each lamb was about 701 b, but quite apart from that they were well bred, were well brought out, and were a credit to the snow, but more particularly to th© exhibitor. In the class for three fat lambs bred by exhibitor Mr Bradfield also won with almost equally good sheen. The Romney section •was a fair one, but the competition was not keen. Mr A. MTntosh was allotted both champion certificates. Some good types of collie dogs were exhibited, Mr Janies Stenning, of Eounawea, winning the red ticket in the class for dog or bitch, smooth hair, with a bright, intelligent bitch which would be bard to beat. This - bitch was subsequently selected for championship honours. Numerically horses made an indifferent display. In the draught section there were not more than two entries in any one section. Th© championship in the male division went to Mr J. Ford (Tahatika). who exhibited Sandy Bold, who was described as "not a bad cut of a horse.” Mr Ford also got the red and blue tickets in. the class for brood mares with animals which were described as good types of Clydesdales. . The champion ribbon in the female division went to a nice quality two-year-old filly exhibited by Mr G. Johnstone (Tahatika). This filly also, won the special prize, for the best draught horse, mare or gelding. Although provision was made for thoroughbreds ibe (section failed to attract a single entry. Tile roadster section, however, was quite a creditable one, and there was keen competition in not a few well-filled classes. Mr “W. Allan (Owaka) annexed the champion certificate for entires with a promising two-year-old colt, apparently a straight-gaited trotter, which he has named Young Wildwood. There were six 15-stone hacks entered, but only three came before the judge, Mr A. MTnfyre (Kelso). The first prize went to an entry by Mr G. Reid (Owaka). which possesses style, is well mannered, and Iras good paces. There were seven entries in the class for 13-stone backs, but again onlv throe put in an appearance. Mr W. Telford (Otanomomo) won with a nice paced beast, .Mr J. D. Calder (Ralmui) taking the other two tickets with good quality animals. Mr Reid was awarded the championship ribbon for the best saddle herso on the ground, with his 15-stone hack. Mr Calder was the only exhibitor in buggy pairs, and was given the red ticket with a useful pair of horses, which wore well matched and were good goers. In single buggy horses Air L. Vial. (Owakal won in ■the single buggy class with a nice paced trotter. Air Vial also won the first prize in the class for best turnout, Mr Calder being second. The best ring of the pony (section was the class for 14-hand ponies, which attracted six entries. First prize went to,Air G. S. Wilson (Glenomarn), who had a comparatively easy win with his stylish peny. which annexed first, prize at Milton, Balclutha, and Dunedin Shows this season. It is a pony which would be hard to beat Jjn any show ring. The same animal won im harness pony class and was decorated with the champion ribbon for the best pony on the ground. Ttio competitions were attractive, and the fact that Air \V. 11. North’s horses, which bed just returned from a successful round of tho shows, including Invercargill, whore be gave such excellent performances, no doubt added to the interest taken. Mr horses, however, did not give anything like the finished display that they gave in Invercargill. This exhibitor won in tho hunters’ class with Chummy, and tied for second place ■ in the high jump with i). Calder. 'Hiis event was won byMr W. Telford. The household produce section was quite a creditable one, most of the classes being well filled. Mrs J. Craig (Pukeawa) allotted tho awards, and oxoressed herself as pleased with the quality cf the exhibits. Salt and faiicv butter were excellent, and the s&me applied to cakes. Airs G. Brownlie (Ponnnwea) was the most successful exhibitor, and gained the special prize for the most points ip -household produce. The competition in the dairy produce classes was keen, and Mrs , Craig found it difficult at times to come to a decision. Mrs Radford (Tawamti) was the most successful exhibitor. Messrs H. A. Brough (Ltd.) had no opposition in hams and bacon; and were awarded all the prizes. The following is the prize list:— CATTLE. SHORTHORN. Judge: Mr D. Bryce (LoveU’a Flat). Bull, three years and over.
