LATE COMMERCIAL

CANTERBURY MARKETS. (Peb United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 14. The rain which fell during the week has undoubtedly done good, but the more recent nor’-westera are having a bad counter-effect. The threshing of ryegrass has commenced in the Ashburton district, and crops are turning out well. The demand for cocksfoot has gone off to some extent, and at present there are more sellers about than buyers. Machine-dressed seed is worth from 9Jd to lOd. Reports from Home regarding Partridge peas are anything but encouraging, Ihe latest advices state that there are between 600 and 700 tons of New Zealand peas in London stores still unsold. The demand for oats has slackened off during the week. Inquiries are still coming to hand from Australia, but, so far, no business has eventuated. There is a slightly better demand for white clover and cowgrass from the North Island, although no sales of any considerable extent have been recorded. The position in respect of chaff is unaltered. Graders at Lyttelton have tightened up the grade for good, bright quality, and merchants, in consequence, appear to be a little ehy in quoting for it in any Quantity. NATIONAL BANK OF NEW ZEALAND. There was almost a total clearance of the 4063 bales which were submitted at the wool sale to-day. Bidding was hardly so'spirited for plain and shabby wool as was the case yesterday, but for all wool of good quality there was practically no change in values. Crossbreds maintained the pervious day’s high prices. There were no record prices to-day. Several buyers who had been present at the sale yesterday were absent today, having satisfied their requirements, but their absence did not affect the keenness of competition.
