TRAMWAY EXTENSIONS.

RECOMMENDATIONS BY THE COMMITTEE. I’ELieiiET BAY AND FORBURY PARK. The Tramways Committee of the City Council will submit the following recommendations to the meeting of the council to bo hold next wedk:— In terms of instruction from council to further consider those items in the schedule of tramway extension proposals dealing with (a) lino to Pclichot li-ay, (b) lino to the exhibition, and (c) line to Forbury Park, your committee begs to report as follows l pon further consideration, it has been deemed advisable to substitute for the Pclichet Bay via Albany street line a line miming off George street down Frederick street,- thence along Harrow, street, Forth street/ to Pelichct Bay and the Exhibition. This lino would cost £25,350, to which would need to bo added the sum. of £2500 to cover the cost of strengthening the bridge over the Leith at Forth street to carry the tramway traffic, jhe original estimate allowed £3600, for the Atomy street line, and £16.450 for the Exhibition requirements. The proposal new submitted will serve both Pelichct Bay and; the Exhibition and will also meet the objections of the University Council to tile Union street line. Your commit-tee is not in favour of constructing a tramway along the proposed broad highway to Logan Park, as apart from the Exlnbiton it would be quite unsuitable for the greater part of its length as a permanent service for the Pehchot Bay area. As a temporary line for the Exhuation only, the cost (£24,000) woulc} burden the line to an extent that practically places the proposal outside the scope of serious consideration. In regard to the line to Forbury Park, your committee has considered the suggestion that the Ray View road route might be utilised, but is of the opinion that such route is not the most suitable. Portion of Bay View road is only 25ft. wide between kerbs, and a single line only could therefore be laid down. Such a lino would not provide a satisfactory service for Forbury Park, and the capital cost of the extension would be £2400 greater than that of the mchardson street route. The Richardson street line could also later on be extended cither to St. Clair or link up -with Cargill road via Forbury crescent, Main street, and Helena street. ‘Your committee therefore begs to re-submit its former recommendation qmfccdving tho construction of the lino to Forbury'Park-via Richardson street, including balloon loop running down Plunkot street and returning via Given street, at an estimated cost of £12,000. The alteration in the total cost of the whole of the proposals recommended will be as follow's ; _ Original estimatesExtensions to lines £58,550 Plus shed facilities (£6000) and Exhibition lino (£15,450) ... : ... 21,450 £90,000 Deduct Union street lino (£5600) and Exhibition lino (£15,450) ... 19,050 £70,950 Add now lino for Pelichet Bay and Exhibition 25,550 Plus contribution for bridge ... 2,500 v ,V ' Total ... ', £93.800 ■ 'The grand total is therefore increased to £98,800 (or, -say,-. £100,000) as against the original estimate of £90,000.
