GENERAL NEWS.

The half-yearly meeting of the Dunedin and Suburban Operative Butchers’ Union was held on Monday evening, the president (Mr Brettell) presiding. The half-yearly report' and balance sheet were presented, and showed that the union is in a highly satisfactory position. The conditions of the award had been fairly well observed, and any infringement had been promptly dealt with by the local Department of Labour. . The report and ■ balance sheet were adopted, and a vote of thanks recorded to the secretary (Mr Wilson) and auditors (Messrs Riach and E. Tuckey). General regret was expressed that owing to tho want of unanimity amdhgst the employers the proposal for the extra day’s holiday a,t Christmas and New iear had bean dropped. The appeal for a donation for tho Radium Fund was considered, and as this was consiered a most deserving object it was unanimously decided to vote the sum of £lO to the fund. A large and ntluontia' committee,' with Mr Brittell as chairman and Mr Kirknees as secretary, was appointed to make arrangements for. the, annual picnic The quarterly meeting of the A.0.F., Court Littlejohn, was held on Tuesday evening, and was oresided over by the C.E., Sister Q. Broadfoot. Three candidates were nutated, the ceremony being conducted by tho C.E. and 1.G.C.K., Bro. C. F. Reynolds. After the business had been concluded an adjournment was made to the supper room. Bro. Wilson, in presenting P.C.R. Bro. A. H. Sinclair with a silver-mounted umbrella, referred to the good work done by the brother. He had on four separate terms held the office of C.R., and had always done his duty in a thorough manper. P.C.K. Bro Sinclair, in responding, said that be bad received a great deal of pleasure in presiding over the meetings, and thanked the members for tho assistance they had given him. P.C.R. Bro. Edwards expressed his pleasure at the number of young members present He urged all present to be regular in their attendance, 1 and so assist in carrying on the work of the court. P.C.R. Bro. Himmell, in responding to the toast of visitors, thanked all present on behalf of Court Enterprise for the way he hod been received. The final meeting of the year of the Rescue Lodoio, No. 103, 1.0 G.T., was held on Tuesday °last in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Kensington C.T. Bro. W. A. lies presiding. There was’ a very large attendance of members. One candidate was admitted into the order, tho ceremony being carried out by the C.T, and his officers. After _ recess the evening was devoted to a social hour, Bro. H, Sinccok rendering a solo, and addresses were given by Bro. Rev. B. Metson and Bro Dalton, G.C.T. The doll competition for the Queen Carnival was won by Sister L Sinccok, Mr A. Shearer - presenting a doll’s soagrass pram for competition at the Queen Carnival, which ploses on January 9. Tho second annual picnic of the above lodge was held at Brighton on Saturday, December 8 The picnic party, over 80 in number, were conveyed by motor lorries. The Juvenile Temple met on Tuesday last in the Odd?Vi fiT Bro. J. Bunting presidBro. Hilton 5 also was its final night of the year and nrizos were presented to members for attendance and, conduct Special prizes were worT respectively by Sis. R Smccck and Bro. Stanley Wilson. The final arrangements were made with regard to the Temple picnic Vh e e monthly'ineeting of the Court Hope „{ Green Island, A.O.F. (Juveniles) was held in the P.A. Hall on Thursday night, when C R Bro. M’Ewen presided. There was a „ood attendance of members. The ’Woodwards reported that there were no members on the sick list at present, which has been fairly free during the past year Three new members were initiated by the C.E. Bro. M’E'.ven, assisted by the President, Bro. H. Richmond. The court is progressing steadily and scarcely a meeting passes without new members being initiated. Notwithstanding the fact that boys too old t,o be in the Juvenile Court joiu the Adult Court, the net cain for the year just ended is eight. Bros.J. Benfell and Barnes tied in tho competition for getting new members, and the prize was divided between them. The Forbury School Committee met recently, when Miss Dorothy Morton, Standard VI, was presented with a piizo for the best essay, held m connection with Health Week. The Navy League essay prize was won by Miss Alma. Rowlett and Master Boy Lucas (equal). A medal given by the Pirates Chib for the best footballer was won by Master J. Rackley. It was decided to hold the break-up ceremony on December 18 in the Town Hall, at Kilda. It was resolved to call tenders for a soldiers’ memorial, to bo erected at the beginning of the year. The memorial will take the form of an archway. The committee has been promised £i, subject to it procuring nine similar amounts. A medal for the Navy League prize was given by Mr Pullar, and an«ex-pupil (Mr Coller) presented a valuable cup to the school for competition.
