PRESERVING INFANT LIFE.
NTJESES AT PALESTINE* PLUNKET SYSTEM ADOPTED. (Pbb United Pnssa AMOciATton.l AUCKLAND, December 10. About three years ago the Jewish women of Now Zealand raised money to establish two welfare centres in Jaffa with Plunket nurses in charge. Mrs David Nathan today returned from visiting Palestine, where 1 she saw the centres working. The results Rave been more than satisfactory. The American welfare centres decided to adopt the Plunket system in their work. ‘‘The people of Jerusalem,” Mrs Nathan says, “know" little of the methods necessary, to preserve infant life. The mortality among the children is as high as 40 per cent, in Tiberius. The only preventive methods used are amulets /against ‘the evil eye.’ The Plunket nurses in Jaffa are doing valuable educational work. The local ■women are assisting in many ways. There are 5000 babies in Jaffa, and there hare been no deaths during the last two years. It is hoped that Australia will follow the example of Now Zealand and take a practical interest in the welfare work in Jerusalem.” _________
