RUGBY FOOTBALL. THE CANTERBURY UNION. A PROFITABLE SEASON. tPKit United Press Association.' CHRISTCHURCH. November 14. Rugby football in Christchurch returned a profit last season of about £llOO, and o-t this sum £9OO was expended in providing a dressing and training room at Hagley Park. Tho season was commenced with a balance in hand of approximately £IOOO. and after paying all accounts it was anticipated that the year would close with a balance of £I2OO. The union showed a net profit on the year of £2OO, after paying £9OO for the training shed, which was a non-recurring expense and an asset. MARIST CLUB’S APPEAL. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, November 14. The question of the appeal of the Marist Club from its suspension by the Canterbury Rugby Union was before the New Zealand Council to-night. After discussion it was agreed that the whole matter be referred back to the Canterbury Union for an inquiry and report. Mr Wylie, who moved the resolution, said the suspension was purely a temporary measure, and was made without authority. NEW SOUTH WALES TOURING TEAM. BONUSES TO SECRETARIES. SOME STRAIGHT SPEAKING {From Our Own Correspondents.! WELLINGTON, November H There was some straight speaking at the meeting’ of the New Zealand Kugby Union this evening, when requests were received from the secretaries of the three main provincial unions requesting for work done in connection with their various matches against the New South Wales touring team of this year. In one case the amount asked was seven guineas, and Mr Wylie moved that as a compromise the sum of £3 3s should be paid. This did not meet with the approval of the chairman. “Why admit the principle?” demanded that gentleman (Mr S. S. Dean). “It is about time that we acted in this matter.” Mr E. Little ventured the opinion that where a professional man was acting as secretary or treasurer there was some justification for his making a claim, but where tho man was professedly an honorary official he could see no justification for such an act. "Why not bonuses all round?” asked Mr Dean. Twenty pounds for the secretary, £lO for the treasurer and something lor the chairman and members. I cannot see that we should foot this bill. It is simply because this is a New Zealand Rugby Union match. Here is one man. If his honorarium is coming out of any body, it should be from the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union, and it should cover his duties for the season. And hero is Otago. It makes £483 out of the match. Mr Wylie; And We make £6OO and bear the burden. Mr Dean: We are endeavouring to build up Kugby by the visits of those teams from overseas, and when a team comes here and the question of expenses arises it is always the New Zealand Kugby Union which has to bear the burden. Mr Little; If a union gets a match and makes these charges, it is penalising other provinces which do not get a match. Mr Dean: W© cannot make flesh of one and fowl of another. We have a duty to football as a whole. What about those unions which do not get a match and the public which does not see a game? On the motion of Mr Little it was resolved that the bonuses to secretaries and treasurers for matches played against Now South Wales he not passed. HAWKE’S BAY PROTEST. EXPLANATION OF SELECTORS. (ITbou Our Own Correspondent.; WELLINGTON, November 14. The Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union’s protest concerning the exclusion of Gemmell and Mill from the All Black team against New South "Wales w#s considered by the New Zealand Rugby Union this evening, when reports were received from the selectors of the dominion team. Mr A. J. Griffiths (chair; man of tho Selection Committee) expressed the opinion that the Hawke’s Bay Union was “rather offside” in asking for an ex plaliation. Mr Parata, he Said, had advocated the inclusion of Gemmell after th» North-South Island match, nominating him as scrum forward and emergency hooker. He had been very disappointed in Gemmell’s display in the. first test and in practice. As for Mill, there were, he said, “other half backs to be tried as well as he.” Mr Donald Stuart characterised the Hawke’s Bay Union’s action as "'purely parochial.” Personally, he thought that the selectors should not be questioned. After the North-South match, he said, the possibility ot M'Cleary or M'Meeking being injured had been raised. They had no other front ranker, and Mr Farata had informed tho committee that Gemmell could and had played in the front rank. They had been satisfied with this, and the selection had stood. He made no comment upon Mill. Mr T. Parata, in his report, said that the selectors had endeavoured to get Q. Donald down for the first test, but that bad weather conditions had prevented him from reaching tho Brighton camp until Thursday evening. Gemmell had told him that while on tour he had played in the front row, and it had seemed only fair after he had trained and Donald had arrived late, to play the former. In any case he had filled the position very well, and Mr T, S. R. Davis (vice-captain of the New South Wales team) had borne out this fact. It was resolved to inform Hawke’s Bay that the New Zealand selectors, had given an explanation Of the matter. THE ALL BLACKS’ TOUR. QUESTION OP ALLOWANCE. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, November 14. Tho Rugby Union Management Commit'ce decided to support the Otago Union in urging the. New Zealand Union to make further represantation to the English Union to secure an allowance for tho New Zealand team. SANDERS CUP. CANTERBURY TRIALS.
