BAND CONTESTS.

THE CHRISTCHURCH COMPETITION. (Pen United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 3. Eighteen bands, have entered for the Christchurch band competition, to be held from February 18 to 23 next. The contest is in two grades—namely, A, two test selections ; and B, one test and one own choice. The following have entered : A Ornde.—-Queen Alexandra (Wanganui), First, Canterbury Mounted Rifles (Ashburton), • St. Kilda" (Dunedin),- City of Sydney (former!v Redfern), Woolston, Timarn. Invercargill Hibernian, Invercargill Battalion, Municinal Silver (Runanga). B Grade. —Hastings Citizens’, Grevmoutb Municipal, Christchurch Tramways, Oatnaru Municinal. Dunedin Citv Tramways, Nelson Garrison. Dunedin Artillery. Invercargill Battalion, New Brighton, and Kaiapoi. Invercargill Battalion will decide later which grade it will compete in. The majority of the bands have also entered for the hymn selection. Large entries have been received for the solo. trio, and quartet competitions. The prize money (£1500) is a record for any band contest held in Australia or New Zealand. The selections, solos, trios, and quartets will take place in the King Edward Barracks, and the Quickstep on the Metropolitan Trotting Grounds.* Dr J. C. Bradshaw will be the judge of the test selections and of the music in the quickstep. Mr F. W. G. M’Leod (Napier) will judge the solos, trios, and quartets. The military judges have not yet been appointed. THE NORTH ISLAND COMPETITION. <Pkb United Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, November 3. The North Island Brass Rand Association's contest, to be held here in February next, promises to be a huge success. A large number of entries are already to hand, including the following bands:— Auckland Artillery, City of. Sydney, Hawke’s Bay, Whangarei, Marton, Hastings, and Petone.
