METROPOLITAN MEETING. ROUEN WINS THE CUP. GLENTRUIN SUCOTSSFUL IN ; STEWARDS. , (From Our Special Reporter.! ’ OHRISTOHURCH, November 3. The New Zealand Cup meeting was jtopened in hue weather, and there was a largo attendance. T he track was m excellent order, but a bit on the slow side. The card provided some splendid racing ond close finishes were seen in the majority ef the events. In the Sphing Hurdles Cerberus 'yon tPoanfortubly, and although Red Admiral lan a good race the former was too solid at the weights. Rorko s Drift had to tnake up a.lot of ground to finish third. Soliform. the winner of the Spring Plate, was going strongly until a furlong Coni tome, but had to bo shaken up at the finish. Swallowflight paid his dividend when he tame with a strong run at the finish ol the Linwood Handicap and got up in time to beat Uleaborg. Eosedav was made a strong favourite for the Cup' with Muraahi a good second goice and Pilliewinkie next in demand, uppy Warrior was the early pace-maker jErom Quest, Roseday, and Royal Star. Leaving the straight Quest and Happy Warrior clapped on the pace, and with Kilbird end Royal Star next opened up a gap from Roseclav, who was four or Eve lengths away from the leaders and three lengths m front of the next lot, headed by Dame Straitlace. Happy Warrior retired before reaching the far turn where Quest was leading Kilbiru, (Royal Star, Vagabond, and Muraahi. After passing the five-furlong post Roseday went right back on the rails Up to this stage he had been going well, but was crowded Iback. Quest led into the straight from Kilibird and Royal Star ami right up to the distance where Dame Straitlace took charge and looked a winner, but. Rouen, who had lost his place earlier in the race, came again with a strong run and got up in time to win by a neck. Roseday, who was one of the last into the straight, came througft on the rails and finished a length away third, just beating Royal Star. If Roseday could have held Ids place between the four and five-furlong posts he must have won, but Rouen also had to make up a good deal of lost ground, and his win was full of merit. After the race the stewards held an inquiry into the riding of Roseday and finally accepted the rider’s explanation. Going along the back Roseday, who was alwava on the rails, was travelling strongly, and "he was still going well after rounding the far turn. The rear lot then closed up, andwwhen Muraahi and Vagabond ranged alongside him the others also came on and Roseday was promptly blocked in and went iback to second last and was still there as they turned for home. He came with a preat run in the; straight and getting through on the rails managed to gain a 'place. It appeared as though Roseday. who was under a pull whilst the others were making a run, could not get going quickly enough to hold his place. This is often, 'the case. A horse under a pull is under a disadvantage when tackled by others coming with a run. and this appeared to ibe the cause of the trouble. Wilson states that when he lost his place the others came at him so fast that he could not go with them, and thus lost a royal chance of a win. There is no doubt that the horse was solidly backed by the owner, trainer, and rider, as well as their friends, in fact the stable was fairly confident of winning. Dame Straitlace ran a good race and so did Royal Star. Pilliewinkie disappointed bis admirers, and it is doubtful if he was ready to go two miles. Kilbird died away before reaching the distance. Quest was still looking like a winner after making mosQof the pace. 'The winner is about the only stayer sired by Bezonian and apparently the turn over the hurdles has greatly improved his stamina. Muraahi ran a fairly {food race, but found the journey a bit too far. Deucalion did better than was generally expected in finishing close to the placed lot. The sectional times wore 53sec, Ixnin 45 2-ssee, and 2min 37 2-6 sec. The Welcome Stakes was a battle royal ■t the finish between Killoera and Inferno. Bagby on Killccra got well away, and was a couple of lengths clear as they came to the Straight. He saw Inferno in plenty of time, but could not resist the latter’s challenge. The winner is a handsome, wellgrown colt, and fills the eye as one who should blossom into a Derby horse, but as an Absurd he may never add stamina to his brilliancy, although nothing could have 'finished more resolutely under punishment than he did to-day. Inferno was got by Absurd from Ayah, by All Red from Herinosa, by St. Leger—Lady Evelyn, by Pcrikin Warbeck —Pulchra. and so belongs to the same family as Multiform, Cruciform, and other high-class performers. The draw at the barrier for the Stewards from the rails was Peneus, Limelight, Muribaupo, Gazeworthy, Parody, Barn Owl, Tukia, Lovesign, Mireusonta, Wink, Glentruin. Rational, Many Kittle, Lady Fingers, Razzle Dazzle, Refrigeration. Mireusonta began the most smartly, and once in the straight was followed by Murihaupo, who •was going well, and Glentruin, who got a lucky opening on the rails at the finish to mark her second success in the race. The fact that she was coupled with Murihaupo made her price shorter than would otherwise have been the case, as the general opinion was that she was not quite forward enough to win. Until F. D. Jones, her trainer, returned from Sydney only a couple of weeks back she had not done any really fast work, and although galloping brilliantly during the last week the track watchers did not like her chance. Tukia looked to hold a good chance at the distance, but failed to finish nearer than a good fourth. Rational could be seen well up, hut wide out. in the early part, but he could not head off those nearer the rails. Murihaupo ran an excellent race and was finishing strongly, and Mireusonta stayed better than usual. Barn Owl ran fairly well, and so did Razzle Ifazzle after beginning from a wide position at the post. , , , After the race the stewards suspended J. Hall, the rider of Parody, for one month for interfering with Razzle Dazzle and Refrigeration shortly after (he start. Parody drew fifth place, but was sent to the outside of the field. Pritice Ferouz won the Riccarton Welter meritoriously, and Mantua and Gold Star hod to make up a lot of ground to finish pear the'placed lot. During the day the starting was excellent. ihe investments on the totahsator ran to £70.997 10s, compared with £79,141 10s last year. Results: SPRING HURDLES HANDICAP. Of 400sovs. Two miles, B—Mr H. The following historic incidents connected with the New /Zealand Cup appear under the name of “Phaeton” in the Auckland Herald; Tire first - New Zealand Cup run at Riccartou under the Canterbury Jockey Club was in 1883, when the Australian-bred horse 'Tasman won the race by a short head from the favourite, Nonsense. The highest weight carried to victory in the Cup is 8.9, under which impost Tasman, Lady Zetland, and Sasanof scored in their rspective years. Two dead-heats have been recorded for the Cup. In 1900 the judge was unable to separate Fulmen (7,10) and Ideal (7.7), and in 1914 there was a similar record between Warstep (7.Hi) and Indigo (6.12). In the race of 1868 the whole of the places in the Cup were monopolised by the three-year-old division —viz., Manton (6.10), Son of a Gun (6.5), and Exchange (6.0). Two English-bred horses in Lochiel and ’Frisco have won the New Zealand Cup. Both the horses named were Sired in England and foaled in New Zealand. Bridge was given credit of winning the Cup in 1910 in 3min 2osec, but Royal Star’s record in the same time two year's ago is regarded the most reliable. S. Lindsay and H. Gray have each steered three winners of the Cup. The first-named rider scored respectively on Rosefeldt, Tirant d’Eau, and Seahorse, while Gray's successful mounts were Bridge, Sasanof, and Oratress. K. Devrett won respectively on Tasman and Vanguard, and he was the pilot cf Fulmen when that horse dead-heated with Ideal in the rgee of 1900. Martian holds the-Sire record for the New Zealand Cup with four winners, his descendants, Ardenvohr, Menelaus. Sasanof, and Vagabond, scoring in four successive years. Two descendants of St. Leger in Waiuku (8.6) and St. Paul (8.7) fought out the issue for the leading place in the Cup of 1897, the first-named winning by half a length. In the igce of 1883 the verdict was in favour of Tasman by a head; a similar distance separated Downfall and Heorthen in 1908; while in 1919 Midnight Sun gained a half-head victory from Masterpiece. Lady Lucy, who won the Cup in 1909, was brought when a foal for 32gs. A brace of embryo New Zealand Cup winners were sold under the hammer on the same day and on the same ground in 1903. The English-bred ’Frisco was one, and the colt subsequently known as Downfall—who was ip utero when Sold —was the other. ’Frisco and Downfall Won the Cup in succeeding years. The four-year-olds have the most wins to their credit in the New Zealand Cup with a score of 11. The winners of that age, with their respective imposts, were:—Spade Guinea 6.10, Tirant d’Eau 7.7, Grand Rapids 8.5, ’Frisco 7.6 (41b over), Downfall 7.8, Lady Limy 7.1, Bridge 7.10, Vice Admiral 7.8, Midnight Sun 8.0, Warstep 7.11 (dead-heated with Indigo), 'Ardenvohr 7.3, Menelaus 8.1, Sc'on 7.10. Seven-'mares have won the New Zealand Cup—viz.. Spade Guinea (1886), Rosefeldt (1893), Lady Zetland (1896), Tortulla (1901), Lady Lucy (1909), Sinapis (1913), and Oratress (1920). In addition, Ideal ran a dead-heat with Fulmen in 1900, and Warstep got off a similar performance with Indigo in 1914. The most pronounced surprise recorded in connection with the Now Zealand Cup was in 1906, when Star Rose beat the favourite, Multifid. In the race of 1886 the top weight, Nelson, defeated all h:s opponents with the exception of Spado Guinea. At three old Euroclydon won the Cup, and in the following year filled the role of runner-up to Lady Zetland. Fulmen finished second lor the Cup in 1898, and two years after he ran a deadheat with Ideal for first honours. Fulmen and Ideal, the dead-heaters for the Cup of 1900, both ranked as outsiders. R. -->errett steered the first two winners of Ihe Cup—viz., Tasman (1883) and Vanguard (1884). On . each occasion of the two dead-heats being recorded for the New Zealand Cup North and South Island owners each claimed a horse in the dead-heat. Tangihou, who won the Cup in 1915, was bought when a yearling for 80gs by Mr L. G. M'Donald, whose colours he carried to victory in the Riccarton race. Spade Guinea, winner of the Cup of 1886, was owned and trained by R. J. Mason, who subsequently trained three other winners of the Riccarton race in Lochiel, Grand Rapids, and Noctuiform. In the decision of the Cup of 1894 Impulse and Lottie, who were both owned in Auck-. land, finished first and second respectively. Horses carrying less than 7.0 have won the New Zealand Cup on seven occasions. In the Cup of 1915 a trio of five-year-olds— Sinapis, Sea Pink, and Midnight Sun—-filled the places. There was a .similar record in 1918, when Sasanof, Rose Pink, and Menelaus came home in that order. The following mares finished eecond, in their respective years for the Cup: —Nonsense (1883), Leonora (1884), Dudu (1890), Thame (1891), Is Dien (1893), Lottie (1894), Heorthen '(1958)> Rose Pink (1918), and liraribbon (1920). North Island owners arc well ahead- in the question cf furnishing winners of the New Zealand Cup. The North has supplied 22 outright winners and two dead-heaters, while the South has 15 outright winners and two dead-beaters. The list is made up as follows : North Island. —Tirailleur, St. Hippo, Rosefeklt, Imoulse, Waiuku, Tirant d’Eau, Seahorse, Ideal (dead-heater), Tortulla, • Halberdier, Star Rose, ’Frisco, Downfall’ Lady Lucy, Bridge, Midnight Sun, Sinapis, Indigo (dead-heater), Tangihou, Menelaus, Sasanof, Vagabond, Oratress, Scion. South Island.—Tasman, Vanguard. Fusilade, Spade Guinea, Lochiel, Manton, Wolverine, British Lion, Euroclydon, Lady Zetland, Fulmen (dead-healer). Canteen, Grand Rapids, Noctuiform, Vice-Admiral, Warstep (dead-heater), Ardenvohr, Royal Star. AUCKLAND HACKS HIGHLAND WINS MITCHELSON CUP. Per Unite-i Punsg Association.) AUCKLAND, November 3. The Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting was opened to-day in fine weather and before a largo attendance. The totalisator handled £73.291 10s, compered with £06,929 last year.
