THE DAIRY CONTROL BOARD.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —-The success or failure of dairy control will depend very largely on the character and anility of the men appointed to act as members of the board. Naturally, dairymen, waose produce tho board will control, will wish to know something of the men nominated in order that they may vote intelligently. How are dairymen to acquire this knowledge? It is clearly impossible for any candidate to traverse tho island and meet the voters. Your issue of this date reports a meeting between the Dairy Control Committee, tho Farmers’ Union, 'and the Dairy Farmers’ Union. Tho Otago men who attended that meeting were, I understand, Messrs Bryant (Henley), Waite (Waiwera), Dualop (Pine Bush), end Fisher (Invercargill). These men are, I suppose, included in the term representatives. I would well like to know whom they represented. I am both a dairy farmer and 1 a member of the Farmers’ Union, and I heard not one word of the whole business. I take it upon myself to say also that not 5 per cent, of the producers in the South Island knew* that any euch meeting was to be hold. I admit quite freely that our representatives must have impressed tho men of the more progressive north very favourably, as the names of two of them appear on “the ticket.” Now, where do w*e come in? It appears to rne that producers should at once take steps to divide the island into three wards. The dairymen of each ward would then meet at a convenient centre, and ■agree as to the candidate to be nominated for that particular ward. All three wards could then vote for the man so nominated. This is a matter of very grave importance to dairymen, and I trust that the provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union will at an early date call tho produces together at Dunedin to go fully into the matter.—l am. etc..
