Mr R. B. Tennent, of the Department of Agriculture, will leave by the express thia momjng for Christchurch, to attend a conference of instructors in agriculture. A special meeting of representatives on. tho Otago and Southland Fire Underwriters’; Association was held in the association . f rooms on Thursday to bid farewell to Mr W. H. Cowper, who has been for over four years local manager for the Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company, on the occasion of his leaving for Christchurch to take up the position of controlling officer for the South Island for his company. Tht . chairman of the association, Mr M. H. T. Priest, presented _Mr Cowper with an in* scribed walking-stick and a tobacco poucbfc and wished him an’d his family future happiness and prosperity. The remarks of the chairman were heartily endorsed by - several other speakers. :.... On Wednesday evening the staff of Messrs J. Rattray and'Son met to bid farewell to one of their colleagues. Miss May Henderson, who is about to be married. Mr W.D. Anderson voiced the regret felt at Mis# Henderson’s retirement, and congratulated her on the important step she was taking. On behalf of her. fellow-employees, he presented her with a handsome dinner set as a small token of the respect and esteem in . which she- was held, and assured her that she carried away with her the best wishes of all for her future happiness and prosperity. Ho was on a visit to his brother at Hawera. when he was taken suddenly ill, and died at the Hawera Hospital. 'Some 40 years _ ago ho entered the Uhion Company’s service, and was for some time in charge of the company’s workshops at Port Chalmers. About 12 years ago he removed to Wellington, and entered the service of Messrs Eckfqrd and . Co., and the greater part of the time he■was with that firm he was engineer of tha‘" Wairau. He leaves a family of three ters and one son. t-c The late Mr John Clarke Wilson, whoso death occurred on Tuesday last, was a figure well known to the older generation of business men in the city. He was born at Kronstadt in 1851, his father being at that time Superintendent of Naval Dockyards for the Russian Government. When the Crimean War broke out the late Mr Wilson, his mother, and the rest of the children were sent to Scotland, but the father ' was called to Moscow by the Russian Gov-;, eminent. He was never seen again by hi^• wife and family. After an education at" Kirkcaldy High' School, the late Mr Wjjb'S' son entered the service of the Bank .oifl. Scotland. He left the bank to visit Ans-;r tralia and New Zealand over 40 years ago. He remained in Australia for only a short; period, and then came to Dunedin, where he married and entered the service of Andrew Lees and Co. He was for many years manager of the firm, a position he resigned in 1908, although ho remained on the direotorate of the firm until, the date of his death. Ho was very highly respected in the business community and was a citizen of the finest type. He is survived by a widow and two sons —Dr Ivan Wilson, of Palmers- - ton North, and Mr W. J. H. Wilson, alsOfe j>f Palmerston North. :
