Fifteen vessels were yesterday entered at the Dunedin Custom-house, four of which were from other i>orts of Now Zealand and the remainder from Victoria, Now South Wales, and Tasmania, viz:—From Melbourne, three; Sydney, three; Hobart Town, two; Port Frederick (Tasmania), one; Adelaide, two. This is the greatest number of arrivals recorded in, one day m the Custom-house at this port. Yesterday evening a public meeting was held at the Edinburgh Castle Hotel, Caversham, to taka into consideration the proposal of the Government to place a tollgate on Cargill’s Hill. Mr Mitchell having been called to the chair, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Kingston, seconded by Mr Feger, “That this meeting views with considerable alarm the resolution _ of tho Pronvineial Government in calling for tenders to erect a toll-house on or near Cargill’s Hill, as they feel tho district of Caversham will receive injury thereby.” Twenty-seven persons voted in favour of the resolution, and only three against it. . . George Street since the footpaths have been repaired evinces how much the value of property depends upon its being easy of access. To many of the shops new and elegant windows are being added, and several places previously untenanted are new occupied. In fact, the street is gradually assuming a thriving and busy business aspect. . .
