POACHING. TO THE EDITOR. Sm,—Another fishing season has just commenced, with every indication of a dry summer, and consequently a lessened water flow in our rivers, and ideal conditions for the poacher. It is to be hoped that the Acclimatisation Society will instruct its rangers to bo more than usually alert. Last season, owing to tho abnormal rainfall, the poacher was, I am pleased to say, not able to do very much harm. Still little lots of empty .303 shells on tops of bluffs overlooking deep holes and deposits o( spent carbide and fuse ou tho banks—all part of the poacher’s equipment—were unmistakcable indications that ho had been carrying on. 1 refer to that sequestered region, and tho anglers’ paradise, the upper reaches of the Pomahaka River. The Hon. Sir Francis Bell, when discussing tho Native Birds Protection Bill, said he believed that our State forest rangers wore going to bo the best fortification against tho complete destruction of birds. I ask. why should they not be used against the illegitimate destruction of fish also? I understand that they arc rangers under the Animals Protection Act. Does the Acclimatisation Society recognise them? Why not issue badges to them'’and publish their names? There are three of them stationed very close to the Pomahaka and Waipahi Rivers. Free licenses should be issued to oolicemcn and forest rangers, I have been informed that the Canterbury Society does that. Poaching is becoming much too prevalent. It is a standing joke in one district that the ranger makes his headquarters at tho home of a poacher. I should like to see a. poacher’s detection fund started from which a ranger should be rewarded for every conviction ho gets.—l am etc.. Greenwell's Glory. Kelso, October .25.
Bees recently took possession of a pastry shop in Paris, customers and assistants dashing wildly out at the appearance of the warm. The invasion lasted three hours, in spite of all efforts to clear the place.
