AUCKLAND SESSIONS(Per United Peeks Association.) AUCKLAND. October 30. Commenting on the opening of the criminal sessions, Mr Justice Stringer said the calendar was exceptionally long, containing 33 cases against 31 individuals, but there was nothing special about the list except the deplorable proportion ot sexual offences, which constituted nearly half of the number of cases. “This seems to indicate,” he added, “an extent of degeneracy amongst the community which is somewhat disquieting, though_ none of the cases seems to bo of a particularly gross character.” WELLINGTON CALENDAR. (Phk United Peeks Association.) WELLINGTON, October 30. The Supremo Court sessions opened today. Mr Justice Reed, in his charge to the grand jury, congratulated the city on its freedom from crime. It would be gratifying if they could take it as some indication that crime was decreasing in the dominion, but he was afraid that was not a fact. The reports from other centres showed that the criminal calendars were quite as large as usual, and they knew that within the last week two very gross murders had been committed in the North Island. True bills were returned in all five eases. Charles Edward William Phillips (wh‘o pleaded not guilty) is charged with bigamy and with making a false declaration under the Marriage Act.
