and had a three lengths lead. Trespass was a length behind Razzle Dazzle, and then came Sunart, Enthusiasm, and Thespian. Of the 13 starters for the Pearce Handicap Ardour and Pillicwinkie carried most money. After a false start the field got away nicely, aud for a furlong nothing showed out. Then Zouave took command, with Quest, Kilbird, Stork, ancTCleasanta all lying close to the leader. Zouave led round the bend, where the order was practically unchanged. At the straight Kilbird -was in front, but- soon afterwards Pilliewinkio. who had been lying back, put in a run and ran home with a length to spare from Kilbird. Stork was close up third. Motley was fourth favourite for the Roseneath Handicap. At tho rise of the barrier the field came out together, but tho favourite soon gained the lead, and turning into tho straight was still in command from Fool’s Paradise, Fanadees, and Aottore. RACING IN AUSTRALIA. THE CAULFIELD MEETING. WYNETTE WINS THE CUP. Prt«a Association—By Telegraph—Copyright MELBOURNE, October 21. (Received Oct. 21, at 5.6 p.m.) 'Hie weather was fine and bright for t.he Victorian Amateur Turf Chib’s third day. The attendance was about 40,000. The going was good. The favourite Heroic was always prominent in the Gwyn Nursery, and won very easily in record time for the race. H. Cairns rode Heroic, who cost £IBOO as a yearling and has scored two wins and one second in throe starts. Cairns . won the race last year on C'oolah, who was trained by Heroic's mentor, Godby. The Caulfield Cup was a groat race, the honours being with Wynette, who was fifth last leaving the straight and fifth at the half mile. Wynette came through well and won brilliantly from Kasingwold after the latter had led for a long way. Eusingwoid battled on gamely to the end. Yacamunda, who appeared slightly to shift ground at the home turn, ran a good third. The Cypher looked a possibility at the halfmile, but failed to run on. The time, 2min 53sec, is one second outside the course record. The principal result? were as follows :

GWYN NURSERY HANDICAP, of 600sovs. Five furlongs.—Heroic 9.9, 1; Spoarfelt 7.13, 2; Miss Disraeli 7.5, 3. There were 23 starters. Heroic led over the last three furlongs and won by tour lengths. The third horse was three lengths away. Kanachano was fourth. Time, Imin Isec.

Wynette ran up to the leaders, Easingwold and Yacamuna, at the entrance to the straight, where Yacamunda lost ground. Whittier could make no impression on the loaders. In the run home Easingwold showed a bold front to inside the distance where Wynette rail away and won by a length and three-quarters. Yacamunda, who finished boldly, got third half'a length away from Easingwold. The Tyrant was fourth and Whittier fifth, with Happy Queen, The Cypher, and Rivoli next. Brown, the rider of Whittier, crossed the field at the start, and they suspended Brown for one month. Wynette is by Lord Alwyne from Oalipedes, by Carlyon. She is not engaged in the Melbourne Cup. Helicopter, who was always well up, won the Windsor Handicap by a narrow margin from his stable mate Farr. He is a Colt trained by A. Nolan. Helicopter is a Derby candidate.

Length; a-half. ROWING. OTAGO ROWING CLUB. OPENING OF SEASON. If the stat® of the boathouse and plant and the enthusiasm of members can be .taken as a criterion, it is surely safe to predict that the Otago Rowing Club will have a very successful season during the year it has now entered upon. It is abundantly evident to the visitor that a good deal of time and energy has been expended by some of the members recently, and the result of their efforts is very satisfactory. The plant has been thoroughly overhauled, and the boats all newly varnished, and with their freshly-painted riggers present a very fine appearance. The looker room has been painted and renovated, and the general training room and committee room have been papered and painted. In addition, the outside of the shed has also had attention, and a considerable sum of money must have been spent in building, a new grid and forming a new approach to the boathouse. New piles have also been placed under the boathouse. Taken as a whole, the present state of the boathouse and plant is a matter upon which the deputy-captain (Mr J. H. Browne) and Ids willing helpers deserve hearty congratulation. The weather was. rather dull and overcast for the official opening on Saturday afternoon, but the tranquility of the water was ample compensation for the.lack of sunshine. Mr F. W. Mitchell (the president of the club) declared the season open, and in. doing so congratulated the club on the fine state of the plant and boathouse, which, he said, had never been in a better condition. Delegates from other clubs in the harbour were entertained during the afternoon.

A number of old members were present, probably the oldest being the veteran “Bart” Provo, who was very keen in showing the young members how to use an oar, and intimated his intention of coaching a crew this season. Considering the fact that it was Labour Day week-end the attendance was very good.
