SEMI-PRECIOUS JEWELS AND THE TOILET.

Jewels have always possessed a curious fascination for women of all types and nations. Yet the intrinsic value of a stone does not to-day sway woman's decision in selection as it did in times past. For she realises that a bracelet or necklace, though beautiful in itself, will lose much of its charm if it is out of harmony with the gown she is wearing. This, nerbaps. explains the present-day popularity of the, semi-precious stone. Turquoise, jade, crystal, cornelian, coral, onyx, amber, and many others provide a wonderful range of colour from which to choose. Fashions in design vary from time to time, but. there are often revivals of oldtime craftsmanship, and the moment's vogue for coral is an example of this and has resulted in many antique pieces being brought, to light. In the modern pieces diamond-studded ebony is frequently effectively combined with the coral which is also used just now for tassels, belts, bracelets, intricate necklaces, and even the fringes of dresses. As a change from the popular ropes of beads, strings of ivory, amber, nncl connelian are to be seen cut into square linked chains. Cornelian and amber are also carved into delightful roses to ornament chains and bangles. The latter are extensively worn. Four, five .or six bangles, instead of being placed on the upper arm, now adorn the wrist. An amber bracelet of large flat squares linked together and fastened by an amber buckle is particularly effective. Ear-rings still maintain their popularity, and in many cases are bigger than ever. Delightful exanmles appear in the form of tiny bunches of gold or silver gnipes or pine cones. Or. again, a minute fountain of diamonds falls from a large diamond drop. Heavy balls of cornelian or crystal or ivory hang from the ear on slender chains.—Daily Mail.
