SPORTING.

D.J.C. SPRING MEETING. BOADICEA WINS BIG EVENT. Tho Dunedin Jockey Club opened their .Spring meeting in dull and somewhat threatening weather, and this perhaps was responsible for a somewhat meagre attendanee and on that was rather disappointing when regarded as a metropolitan fixture. The track was a hit on the soft side, but provided fairly gooil going. The card provided some interesting racing, but none of the New Zealand Cup horses comported themselves with any great distinction. Boadicea has incurred a which threatens to put her out of court for Riccarton, Roseday won well, but even so, he will require some further tuning up to get over two miles. lie is. however, a very much better horse conditionally than he was at this time last year, when he subsequently ran such u good horse at Ricc.irton. Silver Peak fell right out of the picture three furlongs from home, but she pulled up well enough to suggest that a race or two and a few rousing gallops would make a tremendous difference as to her chance in more important engagements ahead. Tho two-year-olds seen out wore at tho best a rather moderate lot at the present time, and the sprinters running under welter-weights were easily dominated by Roseday. The day’s running did not sillily much aim as to the possibilities that may occur in connection with the Dunedin Guineas for which it seems as if Gay Juliet will start favourite. Cartoon went oat favourite in a good betting race on tho Spring Hurdles. When the hold settled down Frenchman and Red Admiral were always disputing leadership, and when it came to battling out the finish Red Admiral had a bit too much for his opponent. Cartoon was a fair third, but neither FalstafE nor Rorke’s Drift seemed to be able to gather sufficient to threaten danger. A newcomer in tho saddle in A. J. Robertson, had tho ride on Orange Bitters and at least hail tile satisfaction of getting him to complete the course for the first time during liis re,a nt < (forts over jumps. The Maungatua Handicap field gave no trouble ;* tho post and got away from a good line. Ravenna soon took charge and turned into the straight travelling strongly and looking n sure winner. Baldowa, Firestick, and Dame Struitlaco merely held the chance of getting second, and this partially barren honour went to Dame Straitluce, Ravenna simply outclassed the field at the weights. A remarkable fact about the win was that E. Mackio, who rode the winner, has only had two mounts in public, and they were both successful. His previous ride was on King Sol at thif Otago Hunt Club meeting. When the iVTLoan Stakes field came into the birdcage Bachelor Gay and Count Cavour looked the most forward of the field. Count Cavour was made an odds-on ’ favourite, carrying over twice as much money as Bachelor Gay, who ranked as second favourite. They were in good line at the rise of tho barrier but Bachelor Guy, who was apparently barrier shy, dwelt and hopelessly extinguished his chance. Lava and La Reve were first to show out and La Reve led into tho straight. Here Count Cavour, who had followed them in tho home stretch, made his effort, and after being twice disappointed in getting through finally found an opening and under punishment answered gamely and: got up in time to win by the narrowest of margins. Tho winner is a whole chesnut by Solfcrino from Bon Bon, and ranks as a half-brother to King's Trumpeter. The second filly is also by Solferino and from Formless by Multiform. Bachelor Gay made up sufficient ground to suggest that ho might have been dangerous if he had got away on terms with tho rest of the field. Still there was no doubting tho merit of Count Cavour’s win as ho stayed on well at the right end:. Boadicea was made a pronounced favourite for tho Mosgiel Handicap from the opening of the betting. They got away from a good line, and when they turned out of the straight Prince Ferouz headed Boadicea and they were closely attended by Gimcase, Silent King, and Billiewinkio as they entered the back stretch, where Hajapy Warrior and Silver Peak were running last. Prince Ferouz led along the back, and Happy Warrior was raced up to him as they went up tho rise. At the distance Boadicea, Prince Ferouz, Pillievviukie, and Purple Spur were almost in line and all under pressure. Boadicea, on the rails, stayed on well, and finally beat Prince Ferouz by a neck, whilst Billiewinkio has a head away third. Purple Spur faded out in the lust half-furlong and finished about three lengths away. Happy Warrior made up his ground too quickly and failed to sustain his effort. Silent King and Silver Peak were in a hopeless position at the tail of the field three furlongs from home. Gimcase was always well up until nearing the straight, but faded out at the business end of the journey. Happy Warrior lost ground at the start, and with a bettor position in tho early part of thfi nice might have supplied some trouble to the winner, but horsemanship and being well seasoned materially assisted Boadicea to land a win. Boadicea incurs a 71b penally in tho New Zealand Cup as a result of her wins in tho Mosgiel Handicap and Geraldine Cup. Warseer and Barn Owl were both strongly supported for the Trial Stakes. Warseer is apparently not a boy’s horse, as he failed to get dangerous, but did not seem seriously troubled when he pulled up. Barn Owl ran a bit jady and was switching her flag three furlongs from home us if her heart was not too much in the business. The Parisian showed pace, but could not carry on, and in the run home Gokilown and Barn Owl stayed on and him, Goldtown stayed on bettor than generally expected from Absurd’s stock, and his win lends additional interest' to the Dunedin Guineas on the second day’s card. Roseday became an odds-on chance in the Electric Handicap. Loughrca was next in demand, but at considerably less support than the favourite. When the barrier rose tho. field lay in fair line, but Jackeroo whipped round and was left. In the Pink was first to show clear from Angelo. Paphian ran to the front and led In tho Pink and Roseday into the straight, with the others close up. Once in line for homo Rnsedav took charge, and coming on won nicely by about a length and a-half from Limelight, who covered ground on the outside, but got up in time to beat Angelo bv a head for second money. Loughroa was half a length away fourth, followed by Avispado and In the Pink. Paphian faded right out when be hit the straight, where a head wind had to be faced. Limelight ran a good race, as she was running last four furlongs from home. Loughroa was always handy, but will probably be better by a longer journey. They were in fair lino when sent awav in the Taioma Handicap, but something went wrong at tho jump out, and Wartime, King Sol, and Overproof were hopelessly out of it. The others quickly straggled, and Enare and Frivol took charge from Bonnie Olive and Uleaborg, and so they turned into tho straight. Here Solero, after making up ground, got up and finally boat, Enure by a head. There was a gap of six lengths between second and third. Uleaborg was fourth. Some of the riders claimed that they did not hear tho starter give the word to go. After tho race the stewards held an inquiry inlo the unsatisfactory start. It was found that the started did not call out loud enough to hear the word to tro. and so some wore left. This was confirmed by Mr L. C. Hazlelt, one of tho stewards officiating at the post, It seems then ns if the riders wait for the starter’s voice instead of jumping out at the rise of the harrier. Outside of Owlscombe and Some Kid anything was showing a price in tho October Weller. Pickaninny carried on the running when (he field got going, and led inlo tho , straight, where Radial drew up mid won rather comfortably by a short neck. Some Kid was a bad third. Owlscombe was well up at. the home turn, but faded right out. The machine put through £17,260, as compared with £19,200 30s for the corresponding day last year. The results are as follow: SPRING HURDLE HANDICAP. Of 225»0v5, second losovs, and third 22Isovs. One mile and three-flum-ters. 1— Mr D. P.
