General Sir lan Hamilton, at the opening of the Gordon Highlanders' Memorial Club in Aberdeen recently t said: “The Gordon Highlanders are members of a chosen band which has in all the world no peer. Since the ancient heroes of Homer used to claim descent from the immortal gods, there has been no legend, heraldic, fabulous, or otherwise, which can compete with the authentic, certificated, historical fact that we were created by the innocent kisses of the loveliest woman in bonnie Scotland, Jean Duchess of Gordon. She rode the county fairs in Highland bonnet and regimental jacket, and scores who would else have spumed the King's shilling received it witn rapture from her lips.”
