Mr E. J. Carroll loft for Wellington by the express yesterday. Mr Herbert Ooull arrived in the city from Wellington by the express yesterday. The Hon. R. Scott, M.L.C., returned from Wellington by the express yesterday. Mr F. W. Mac Lean, chief engineer of railways, was a passenger for Christchurch by the express yesterday. Mr Camille M. Malfroy, milling expert, for the Forestry Department, left for the north by the express yesterday. Mr S. C. Sutherland, manager for Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co,, was. a passenger for Christchurch by the express yesterday. The Rev. A. North, accompanied by his wife., left by the express yesteiday on an extended trip to the North Island, the immediate destination being Wanganui. Mr L. H. Osborn, who has boon [promoted to the position of manager of the Wellington branch of the State Fire Office, will leave for the north on Saturday. Mr S. A. Sheen, accompanied by his wife, left by the express yesterday for'the north on route to England, Prior to his departure Mr Sheen received presentations from the directors and staff of John Reid and Sons, Ltd. Mr W. P. James, who has been laid up in a private hospital, is now improving rapidly, and it is expected that he will shortly be about again. The Committee of the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association last night unanimously decided to extend hearty congratulations to the Hon. W. Downie Stewart on his appointment as Minister of Industries and Commerce. Mr W. A. Sproat, headmaster of Waihopai School, who has been appointed headmaster of Forbury School, Dunedin, was tendered a farewell luncheon by the executive of the Southland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute on Saturday last. Messrs R. T. Sadd (chairman), and D. Ford, representing the Taieri River Trust, and Messrs A. P. Fleming and W. G. Retd, representing the ratepayers of West Taieri, wore passengers by the express yesterday for Wellington, where they will confer with the Prime Minister on flood prevention Works for the Taieri. Mr W. H. Morton, general manager of the Wellington City Corporation, formerly of Sydney, died lost might, after a painful illness. His brother. Dr Morton, is a resident of Sydney. He leaves a wife and family. A cablegram has been received by the Bank of Australasia advising that Viscount Chelmsford has been appointed a director of that bank (says a Wellington Press Association message). He was Governor of Queensland from 1905 to 1909, of New South Wales from 1909 to 1915, and Viceroy of India from 1916 to 1921. Mr R. S. Forsyth, formerly of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, now the London manager for the New Zealand Moat Producers’ Board, proceeded north by tbe express vesterday, and with his wife and family will proceed to London by the lonic leaving Wellington to-morrow. The death occurred at her home at Feudal ton (Christchurch) on Monday nicht of Mrs Rose, widow of Mr Henry Pose, of Dunedin, aged 61. Mrs Rose, who was born in Dunedin, is the second daughter of Mr R. B. Martin. Her brother is Mr Pere-v Herbert Martin, of Dunedin. Her daughter is married to Mr O. S, J. Aloers. solicitor, of Christchurch. Many Dunedin residents, particularly cricketers and footballers. will remember Mrs Rose.
