DUPLICATION PUT IN HAND. Frees Association —By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, June 26. The Stephen, brought 1814 miles of cable, weighing 4200 tons. She will start laying 46 miles of cable from Sydney to Southport on Wednesday morning. The greatest sea depth in this section is 2700 ft. At the conclusion of this work the Stephan will proceed to Suva to commence laying the second section to Auckland —1170 miles. It was recently announced by Mr, J. A. Milward (manager ip Australia of the Pacific Cable Board) that the duplication of the Pacific cable had been decided upon with a view to increasing the efficiency of the service by reducing delays in the vicinity of Norfolk Island. Contracts were placed with the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company, of Greenwich, for the construction of the Sydney to Auckland and Auckland to Fiji section, and the work is expected to be completed in a few months’ time. The duplication of the remaining portion—from Fiji to Vancouver—has been postponed, according to Mr Milward, pending experiments with a new- type of cable.
