Eighteen bags of letters from the United Kingdom, ex the Niagara at Auckland, arrived in Dunedin last night and will Ire delivered (o-day. The newspaper portion (81 bogs) of this mail will come to hand tonight, together with 19 bags and 12 hampers of Australian mail and 35 parcel bags of United States mail ex the Tahiti at Wellington. Members of the City Council Water Committee paid a visit of inspection to the Southern Reservoir yesterday with a view to seeing what progress is being made with the excavation work. The committee is of opinion that satisfactory progress is being made considering the adverse conditions. Tho second cut is now well advanced, ami should be completed by tho end of July. The concreting of the embankment has been commenced, and it is anticipated that the water will bo turned in by the end of August.

A sale of clothing, produce, and preserves was held in the Salvation Army Citadel yesterday afternoon and evening, with the object of assisting those who have before them prospects of a cold and firelcss winter. Business was brisk all the afternoon, the demand for clothing being particularly good, and a substantial sum, the greater part of which will go to supply coal to those who need it, was realised at tho close of the sale.
