ANDRE SKALSKI

A BRILLIANT PIANIST. Mr Andre ©kalslci comes to Dunedin with a brilliant reputation as a pianist and conductor, and will give recitals in the Burns Hall, starting Saturday next, June 2. The Dominion says:—“Appreciation of the art of Andre Skalski. the Polish' pianist, grows with acquaintance. A few days ago few people in Wellington had even hoard his name. To-day the many who have heard Him are prepared to place him in the first rank. Blessed with delicacy of feathery touches, and the nicest discriminating in tonal shadings, Skalski played himself into tjho good graces of the sternest critics—and always legitimately. His treatment of the well-known ‘Berceuse’ tails upon the ear like a benediction. His fairy touch was exemplified par excellence in the dainty ‘Pastorale and Cappnccio’ by Scarlatti. Another feature of the programme was Skalski’s revelation of the manifold beauties of the French impressionist, the late Claude Debussy: Seldom ha~ a visiting artist been received with the enthusiasm that .greeted Andre Skalski at his first, concert in Wellington on Saturday night. Despite nnrjleasant weather renditions, the Town H«iil was crowded. The concert was in every sense a memorable one. At its close the pianist was repeatedly recalled, receiving a flattering ovation. Skalski ably demonstrated the fact, that he is a pianist of great glamour and allure, temperamental, romantic, and almost entirely free from mannerisms. It was a great personal triumph. Skalski is undoubtedly one of the greatest musical delights Wellington has experienced for some considerable time. T he* box plans for the recitals are now open at the Bristol Piano Company.
