ART IN DUNEDIN.

A VISITOR'S IMPRESSIONS. Miss M. E. Berry, a member of the Society of Scottish Artists, who is an exhibitor at the present display of sketches at the Art Gallery Hall, made some interesting observations to a Daily Times, reporter yesterday regarding the quality of the _ work on view. The visitor,' who ia * native of Edinburgh, arrived at lAuddAajl in January of this year, and held anr eit-' ;• hibition of her work in that city, and it is her intention on her way north to hold further exhibitions in some of the New Zealand towns, including Christchurch and Wellington. Her principal'subjects are figure sketches of Scottish and portrait work. Miss Berry mrrota that some of her larger paintings were, riot available for the Dunedin exhibition, _ bus among those oh view are several characteristic scenes of “Ronnie Scotland,” which , possess a special interest for the people d£ Dunedin, while another fine piece of work is a representation of the surrender of ±hp German fleet. Speaking of the display on the walls-o£ the Art Gallery, Miss Berry said that-in her opinion it was a very fine exhibition, and much more up to date than a visitor - might expect! The broad work was particularly good, both in respect to . composition and colouring, and it might with. ‘ ad : vantage be carried even further than in, the case of the pictures under notice/' A lot of the finer painting was very niceiy done, but this style of portrayal would be improved if a little less attention were paid to detail. At. Home art was in a transition stage at; present, and it was broad work that was to be seen at practically all the exhibitions. The School of Art work here struck her as very good, and it was evi-; » dent that the instruction was proceeding along the, right lines. Miss Berry said,th» work that had been done in the water r colour# was much better than that in oil?'and revealed considerable promise. - She also . noted an absence of any large canvases, but remarked that owe did not expect, to find many of these in a sketch exhibition. Altogether it was a very creditable display, and she was very to observe the keen interest that was displayed in art in this country. ■ - Miss Berry added that the Art Society** collection in the adjoining hall was an .admirable one for. a city of this size. Miss Berry, who will leave for . the north early, next week, expects to resume., her journey to England by way of America ia a few months’ time. ’’• ; . ||
