THE PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSIONER.

THE DELAYED. APPOINTMENT. The following resolutions have been unanimously passed by the Otago Section of the New Zealand Public Service Association : This section publicly protests against the undue delay in appointing a Public Service Commissioner. Being dead against acting appointments in any circumstances, this section considers that the highest position in the general public service being tilled in ait acting capacity is a scandal. * The office of Public Service Commissioner is the bulwark which was created to protect the service from political influence, yet the officer entrusted with these important duties is only acting in a temporary capacity, removable at the will o i the political powers whoso possible encroachment on the public servise he is there to withstand. Discontent is felt at the present position as not conducive to the best interests of the public service nor to the general public, and hope is expressed that its protest will bo supported by the press and every member of Parliament desirous of protecting the integrity of the public service of this dominion. LETTER FROM THE PRIME MINISTER. (Pm United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 29. Regarding the Public Service Commissibner, Sir John Luke, M.P., Wellington North, recently received the following letter from the Prime Minister in regard to the appointment of the Public Service Commissioner:— “ I note the representations which you have submitted, and in reply have to inform you that this matter will receive consideration by the Cabinet at an early date. The appointment is being made, as originally intended, from June 1.”
