UNEMPLOYED RETURNED SOLDIERS.
DEPUTATION TO HON. J. G. COATES. ‘ THE MINISTER SYMPATHETIC. United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 29. Mr Leadley (secretary of the Christchurch branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association) waited on the Hon. J. G. Coates to-night with reference to work being found for unemployed returned soldiers. The Minister stated that ho hoped work would be provided for 20 men (not necessarily returned soldiers) at Dyer’s rass road at the end of the week. Mr Leadley asked that preference should bo given to returned soldiers who are out of work. The Minister promised ,to instruct the District Public Works Engineer to show such preference wherever it was possible to do so. The Minister also told Mr Headley, that Cabinet had recently considered a request from the various Returned Soldiers’ Associations to provide work for disamed soldiers whose disabilities prevented them from competing on equal terms with otnor workers. Cabinet had devised means to provide work in ns many cases as was possible. Lists of the names' of disabled soldiers were recently sent to Wellington by the various associations, the Christcfluroh list containing 15 names.
