SPORTS AND PASTIMES

WINGATUI NOTES.' Some very interesting work took place at Wingatui yesterday when several horses were schooled over the hurdles and fences. The proceedings were viewed by considerably more than the usual attendance and apparently more than usual interest is being taken in the meeting. The outside of the course proper was open for fast work. The going was a bit on the soft side, but examination '■ during the morning showed that the horses galloping did not make a deep impression. Geranial was too good for Ruena over five furlongs covered m Imin 12seo Birkeneela drew away from Matatua towards the end of six furlongs, run in Imin 25seo. Longhrea did strong pace work. Bonnetter ran seven furlongs in Imin 33seo, the exact distance from a new peg installed on the track—-the last six in Imin 20sec. Martian Miss and Incursio put up Imin 19sec for six furlongs with the former finishing stronger than the local gelding. Red Admiral and Miss Muriel finished together at the end of six furlongs in Imin 21 2-ssec. Windermere did not shape quite so well as Portfire in a school over the hurdles. Roseday and Clean Sweep were companions over seven furlongs in Imin 52 2-sseo—covering the exact distance. Fabianus was better than Rapid River over three or four fences, and was then nulled off. Rapid River completed a circuit, but was a tired horse at the end. Gladful and Vagabond gave a pleasing disply in a round over the schooling hurdles. General Retain drew away from Hard Hit in a round over the fences, and Pamplana went much better than Romance over country. Silent Dick jumped four fences well. A largo number of horses did from slow to strong half-pace work. Bonnie Winkie developed lameness after working on Monday morning, but apparently the trouble is not • deep-seated and was caused by a shoe pinching him. He walked quite soundly when brought back from the farrier yesterday morning. ELLERSL IE TRAINING NOTES. (Peb United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 29. A majority of the jumpers engaged at Ellerslie meeting* were seen in action this morning. Tigerland and Oakleigh were sent over the big fences. Going over the hill the pair gave a fine display of fencing, and both pulled up well. . Glenotus and Hendra did a similar task. Glenotus fenced well throughout, out Hendra’s display was not so good. En Route, Omaha, and General Advance were companions in a schooling gallop over five hurdles on the course proper. General Advance jumped slowly, and the other pair cleared out from him, and were well in front at the finish, the pair giving a fine display, En Route, if anything, pleasing most. Peter Amans and Poanui covered the name journey, the pair giving a pleasing display. Tempo, Young Thurnham, and Cartoon were sent over four brush hurdles, finishing in the order named. Mimiwhangata, Rosullus, and Utakura started together for a gallop over five hurdles on the course proper. The second obstacle .brought Utakura to grief, but the other pair gave a good exhibition of fencing. The grass track was well patronised. Royal Present and Praiseworthy were the only ones timed before breakfast, the pair traversing six furlongs in Imin 21 4-sseo. Broadwood ran seven furlongs, the last six taking Imin 24sec. Elstow and No Bother, after covering a round at half-pace, ran round in 2min 7 2-ssec. No Bother pleased most. Soulterina and Kohu were associated over a mile and a-quarter, the last round being covered in 2min 3 4-ssec, the pair being on terms at the finish. Bute Sound alone galloped six furlongs in Imin 28 2-ssec. Bitholia covered a round in 2min 2 l-ssec. being brought home oyer the last six furlongs by Penona, Bitholia finishing in front. Boomerday was going easier than Peter Maxwell at the end of six furlongs in Imin 27sec. Bright Gift and Goldplane were together at the end of five furlongs covered in Imin 10 2-ssec. Lady Bruce and Daddy’s Girl were together at the end of a four-furlong spurt done in 53 4-ssec. Mary Bruce easily beat Economic over a round, which she traversed in 2min ssec, Economic taking 2min 8 2-ssec. CANTERBURY PARK TROTTING ACCEPTANCES. (Psa United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH.
