The king 1 pengum which was added to the zoological collection at the Newtown Park, Wellington, a month ago, is a particularly sociable bird, and has made many fast juvenile friends during his brief residence •at the zoo. He is distinctly partial toward children, whom he treats with the respect and gentleness due to brothers and sisters. Divorce cases figured largely in the Supreme Court last week {reports the Now Zealand Herald), no fewer than 26 undefended actions coming before Mr Justice Stringer. In all the cases decrees nisi were granted. Cases in which misconduct was alleged numbered eight, six of the petitioners being men' and two women, uesertion or separation was the ground advanced in 12 cases, no fewer than nine of the petitioners being women. There are still a good number of undefended divorce actions to be heard. " The minds of farmers during recent weeks have been agitated by a discussion on the destructive or other qualities of the rook (says the Hawke's Bay Herald). Instances have been quoted of where rooks have ruined whole crops, and done other damage, until eventually the New Zealand Farmers' took the matter up, and a recent meeting of the Hawke's Bay County Council requested that body to take action against the pest. The council has decided to take the necessary steps to have the present protection on the birds lifted, so that endeavours can be made to keep them in check.
