SIXTY YEARS AGO.
The polling for the two seats for the North Harbour District, in the Provincial Council, took place yesterday, the pollingplaces being tne school-houses, North East Valley and Port Chalmers. At the nomination on Saturday five candidates were proposed; but yesterday morning Mr Hugh APDermicl resigned, stating that he did not wish any votes for him to bo tendered. Last evening, at the North-East Valley school, John Gillies. Esq., returning officer, declared the following to be the number of votes recorded for each candidate at the close of the poll:—John Cargill, 39; George Duncan, 33; John M’Glashan, 23; Charles Duke, 16. THE ESCORT. The Gold Escort arrived at the Treasury yesterday evening with the following amounts: — ozs. dwts.
