At the first meeting' of the newly-elected Moray Place School Committee, held on Monday evening, it was mentioned that Mr J. N. Stewart had that day ceased his duties as head master of the school, and that the new master, Mr Alex. Robertson, was to commence his duties the following day. Stevenson, The monthly meeting of the local executive of the British and Foreign Sailors’ Society was held in the Sailors’ Rest on Monday when Mr- D. L. K. Walker (vice-president) occupied the chair. Mr C. E. Beokingsale (hon. treasurer) reported the receipt of £l2 12s during the month. The credit balance ‘on the city rest fund was £4 Os 2d, and on the Port Chalmers rest fund £2O 13s 2d- £5 was received on the distressed seamen's fund in fulfilment of-a promise made at the annual meeting. Mr Buchan, the city missioner, reported! that six overseas vessels had been in the harbour, and that many meetings had been held for their crews. The attendance had varied from 14 to 45. Free use had been made of the rest, and the men had appreciated the benefits it presented to them. Mr Walker (hon. missionary at Port Chalmers) rp]rorted that the crews of seven overseas vessels had boon entertained at the rest there, and that an interesting social had been held on April 17, attended by about 40 seamen. The list of subscribers was revised, and the renewal of the lease of the Port Chalmers property arranged. An account for £57 10s for marked New Testaments for gratuitous distribution as opportunity served was passed. Another bright entertainment was given in the social room at the Benevolent Institution on Monday evening for the benefit of the inmates. The party of performers, headed by Miss Jipisie Fraser, provided an excellent evening’s amusement, and the smiling faces of the old folk proved beyond doubt that the efforts of Miss Fraser and her assistants brought a spell of happiness into their lives, ’file programme was as follows: —Chorus by the old folk (“When We’re Together”); solo, Miss Linda West; recitations, Miss Noeline Parker; bagpipe selection, Mr D. Colo; violin solo, Master R. Greene; solo, Mrs M. De Silva; Highland reel, Misses Beulah King, Edna Gray, Rita Beck; solo, Mrs Bradley; seann triunhais, Miss Rita Beck; solo; Mr F. Swift; solo, Mr J. Rodgers. The occom paniments were played by Miss Violet Murdoch, Miss Connie Flamank, and Miss Jimsie Fraser, and Mr D. M’Kay supplied the pipe music foi the national ckneeg.
