SIXTY YEARS AGO FROM THE Otago Daily Times. " Inveniam viam out faciam." FRIDAY, MAY 1, 1863.

RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT. ’ Thursday, April 30th. (Befoio A. Clietham Strode, Esq., R.M.) Charge of Perjury.—’The Magistrate’s Opinion of the Lock-up. —William O’Brien appeared on a charge of having committed wilful and corrupt perjury in his evidence on a charge against Eugene J. O’Connor of stealing a horse and dray. It will be remembered that the charge against Mr O’Connor was heard on Tuesday and dismissed; the Magistrate stating that there was not a shadow of ground for it. —Mr Ward said he would undertake that O’Brien should, apologise to Mr O’Connor for the statements he made recocting upon him. — Mr Barton remarked that Mr O'Connor had naturally been very irate that it should. go forth to his numerous friends in Victoria and to others in Ireland, he being really connected with some of the aristocracy there, that he had been in custody for horse stealing. But he was inclined to take a more merciful view and to abstain from prosecution, the matter being one which the law did not forbid being arranged. , . —The Magistrate (to accused) —I discharge you, but be advised to be more careful against giving men into custody in future. You have a respectable' man taken into custody and thrust into the lock-up—a place such as I defy anyone to find its like in the colony. It is worse than the Black Hole of Calcutta: it is a most dreadful place to put a man in—a most fearful place. Mr O’Connor came out of it, to my certain Knowledge, when I went to admjt him to bail, nearly blind. You may go.
