Monday, Apeii, 30. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.)

Eemanded.—Tulford' Benjamin ‘Underhill was again remanded to Friday next on a charge of stealing 26 dozen silver bracelets belonging to the Federal Steamship Company.

An E'cho.—Walter Hanson was charged with being found unlawfully on premises with the purpose of consuming liquor.— Constable Coppell gave evidence that he had raided a house in South Dunedin occupied by Peter Petersen —a sly-grog place. Hanson said that, he was there to visit Peterson. On a search being made a large glass that had contained beer was found - by Hanson’s feet. Hanson admitted that' he had been found on the premises on the'occasion of. a previous raid.—Sergeant Murray gave corroborative evidence.—The defendant forwarded a letter stating that he had gone to the North Island to work. —A fine of 10s and costs (7s) was imposed.

On Licensed Premises.—George Greer and George Bennett pleaded guilty to being found on licensed premises after hours.— The Senior Sergeant explained that the men had been followed by a policeman and found in the back yard.—Matthew, Richards, : licensee of th*e Farmers’ Arms Hotel, stated that he had never seen the men before the occurrence. They had no right on the premises. So far as he know, they had not been served with drink at his hotel during the day.— Sergeant Dunlop gave evidence ,as to having questioned the defendants when they were brought tq the police station.-—The statement of the defendants was that they had gone into 'the yafet .to use Ihb .'urinal —The Magistrate did hot believe the, story, and fined Bennett (whose “list” was produced) 40s and costs (7o) and -Greer 20s and costs. By-law Cases.—Hector M’Millan, for riding an unlighted bicycle; was fined 6s and’ costs (7a). —Norman Findlay, who bad left an unlighted motor-car in the street, was fined os and costs (7s).— —James Cormack, who had, in the course of his employment, lighted a fire in the open, was fined 20s and costs' 7s). Wandering Cattle. —Hugh Urquhart and Robert Wyse were fined 9s for allowing cattle to wander: John Gale, whose horse had beeh found at large, was fined Ss and costs (7s); Charles Meade was find 20s and costs for allowing cattle to wander. The Arms Act —James BaJlantyne Hislop had failed to make application to register a Winchester repeater within the time limit, and was fined 10s and costs (7s). —Alexander Munro was fined Ss and costs (7s) for a similar offence. Maintenance. —Hugh Brown was sentenced to three months’. imprisonment in Dunedin Gaol for the disobedience of a maintenance order, the warrant, which is not to bo issued until applied for, to bo suspended so long as the defendant paid 20s per week. —Matthew Alexander Clydesdale, who had disobeyed a maintenance order, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the warrant not to be issued until applied for and suspended while £2 2s a week is paid. Drunkenness.—Benjamin Barker was arrested for drunkenness on Saturday, and was duly released after £1 had been kept from his possessions. Contrary to expectations, ho. put in an appearance and denied that he had been drunk; His state at the time anything but indicated sobriety, and it was evident that, the statement did not impress the Bench.—The Senior Sergeant explained that the sergeant who had arrested the man had gone away home when ho did not put in an appearance, but Francis George Cummingwho had been in the police station when Barker was brought in, testified that the man had been in a state of helpless drunkenness. The case “stood down” for more evidence, and when it was called again Sergeant Dunlop stated that the man was very drunk when brought to the station. — “I’ve never been drunk in my life,” declared Barker. “You can search the records, but you won’t find a name of Benjamin Barker.” —“We all have to make a beginning,” reminded the Magistrate; and fined the defendant 20s and costs (7s). ■
