The Southland Racing Club bci decided to write to Mr P. A. de la Perrelle thanking him for the efforts he is making on behalf of racing and congratulating him on his endeavours to get legislation placed on the Statute Book to improve the position of racing clubs so early in his political career. Mr T. M. Willord, M.P., has purchased a two-year-old gelding by Kilbroney from Happy Maid, the dam of Bonnie Maid and Ladoga. The Wairarapa Racing Club is relieving horse owners ot some of the burden ol taxation placed on them by the Government. At the Easter meeting stakes will be paid in lull, the club paying the 10 per cent, stake tax.

The yearling brother to The Cypher and the Martian—Laay Lucy yearling bought at the November sales have been shipped to Melbourne.

Whcatfield lias been sold, and joins F. Davis’s stable. He cost 950gns as a yearling, but so far lias been a disappointment. Still, it is reported that he cost his now owner 500gns. G. Clarke, who has been without a jockey's license tor some time, is now attached to T. F. Quinlivan’s stable at Trentham, and intends to make application for a license. Some attractively-bred young stock will be offered at Mr W. Croesan’s sale on March 8, and amongst them is an untried filly by Kilbroney from Parable. Kilbroney has made his beet hits with mares carrying St. Simon blood, and Parable waa got by the Bill o’ Portland (sire of St. Simon) horse Merriwee, who was a Melbourne Cup and Derby winner. Kilboy, who won the Challenge Stakes, A.J.C. Derby, Great Autumn Handicap, Tkentham Gold Cup, and N.Z. St. Loger, was got by Ki 1 broney from Gyro, by Cyxem&n, a son of St. Simon. A recent winner, and a rather promising sort in Loughrea, was got by Kilbroney from Sister Eadius, by Charlemagne 11., a son of St. Simon. Killashandra is by Kilbroney from Symbolism, by Symington from Siphonia, by St. Simon; Songbird is by Kilbroney from Grey Linnet, by Thur&h, whose grandsire Orme was out a sister to St. Simon; whilst Marie Legraye, the dam of Grey Linnet, was by Diamond Jubilee, a son of St. Simon; Peroration (a good -winner in Australia) was got by Kilbroney from Flowery Speech, by Cicero from Persian Lilac by Persimmon, a son of St. Simon; Affectation and Hazzle Dazzle were got by Kilbroney from Simper, by Symington, the sire of Killashandra’s dam; Prank, the dam of Kilnish, was got by Pioton from Spree 11, by St. Frusquin, a son of St. Simon; Hose Wreath was got by Kilbroney d'rom Christmas Hose, by Heliotrope, a son of the St. Simon horse St. Frusquin, and her dam was by a son of St. Simon. And other examples couid be quoted to show that Kilbroney made his best hits with mares carrying St. Simon blood, so that the Kilbroney—Parable filly is bred on lines that suggest she should be a winner when ready t<i- curry the colours. The Southland lUcing Club has decided that the names of rider and draw for places will be displayed on the totaJiastor at its meetings. . w The suspension for three months ot rt. Hunt, the jockey who rode Miark Over in the Flying Handicap at Toiaga Bay, will no doubt be received as an indication that racing officials regard with the greatest seventy anything but the best behaviour on the course (says the Poverty Bay’Herald). It is known that the stewards at Toiaga Bay were on the look-out for any misbehaviour. Hunt, it is stated, made his first appearance in the ■ role of defendant before the stewards. He had been looked upon as a reliable rider of «ood promise, it is said in his defence that his lapse was duo to the effect ox stimulants iak*n while "wasting” to make the weight required for his mount. - . a comnuuce meeting of the Southland Racing Club the following wore nominated as delegates to the District Committee; Messrs W. T. Hazlett (Invercargill), F. Wallis (Gore), T. Hamilton (Wrnton), W. Gardiner (Oamaru), and D. Gordon (Riverton). The following were nominated as representatives to the Racing Conference;—Messrs W. T. Hazlett (Invercargill) and F. Wallis (Gore). Some time ago the writer made the ■ statement that in addiioin to 'the electric buttery in the lead bag, a hand! battery, which was very iiard to detect, wan in use on our courses. This was pooh poohed by those in authority, but (says ‘•Whalebone’' in the Auckland Star) word from South Australia states that there is every reason to believe that it is in use there, and perhaps now those responsible will realise that it was not a cry of* wolf. There is no wish to try for the sensational, but it is- the duty of writers to try and protect the public, and the assertion is again made that batteries are in use in New Zealand. Frank Wootton rode his thousandth winner at Birmingham early in January. He won 682 races on the flat in eight years, and sines taking to riding "over the sticks” in 192-J he lias made up the remainder. Wootton commenced, riding in England at Folkestone, in 1906, and in 1914 turned his activities to the weightier matters of the moment. Hence ho lias an average of 100 winning mounts for ouch of bis 10 years of actual riding. It may be interesting to add (says an*'English paper), that Fred Archer rode 2748 winners in lb years, and Danny Maher, Wooiton’s contemporary and most formidable opponent on the flat, scored in lizi races in 13 years.

In commenting on the Wanganui yearling sale, a correspondent to the Press said a oolt by Martian—Bronze realised top place, ilOOOgs, being purchased by Mr Andrew Robertson, of Melbourne, for Mr Sol. Green. Messrs W. Dnnean, G. D. Greenwood, and Vivian Kiddiford were among the bidders, Mr Kiddiford going to 1950 guineas. There was a Melbourne oommssion at the ringside for 1500 guineas. After being passed in at 800 guineas, the brother to Bathos (Absurd —Amyrin) was secured' at the reserve (1000 guineas) by the Wellington agent of a Melbourne firm, which also got the brother to Ambitious (Absurd—Ursula) for 300 guineas. The brother to Bathos was submitted on behalf of his breeder, Mr J. Gleeson, who imported his granddam (Btiim) many years ago. The three colts will be shipped to Melbourne by the first direct boai. Without the foreign buyers the sale would have been rather slow. There was no (Demand for the fillies. The sister to Rational (Absurd —Cowl) fetched 325 guineas, which was top price. She was purchased by Mr H. E. Jones, of Thames. Mr R. Thomas got the sister to Para (Absurd —Cintra) for 170 guineas. The Pennon, Lady Beaufort, and Yes fillies were all passed in. Mr Vivian Kiddiford started the Liquify filly at 100 guineas, and at once became the purchaser. He also got the brother to Laughingstock (Absurd —Com. inerce), submitted on behalf of his breeder, Mr O. S. Watkins, of Wellington, at 450 guineas, after he had been passed in at 500 guineas. The only bid for the brother to Mrnnin was 700 guineas, made by Mr W. Duncan, after which it was announced that the reserve was 1500 guineas. Mr Frank Moore asked 809 guineas for the colt from Noreen, but no one was anxious to become his owner at the' price norned, and he •a ken back to his bo®.
