RIFLE SHOOTING

THE TRENTHADI MEETING. yesuerda vri COM PETTIT ONS. (Pkb United Phuus Association.) TRENTTTAM, March 2. To-day saw the cud dor tue time bams of service shooting, and after a little piciiminary cauier, UmiiaLed by what is called Ujc opening match, the riflemen were able to set themselves to the serious tusk of sifting out the King’s prizeman. Iho wcatner was back to summer season warmth, and the wind was never more than a light, breeze, though Us vagaries proved most disconcerting to the men on the tiring mounds. The day’s work comprised Inc completion of two matches in the services series, out of which the fifty men qualifying to file m the Hcrvice Ulianqnouship, which can its I with it the Kynoch Cup, were brought to light. Then the Belt series was begun, the | opening match (not counting for the cham--1 pionship) and the Canterbury match (the j first counting for the Belt) being got ] through by 5 o’clock. I The conditions in the early morning were 1 puzzling, a mirage running from the left as the sun shone out, and becoming very pronounced before lunch hour arrived. A left drift wits also noticeable. The 300 yards range, however, though tismdly most difficult, was easier than the 500 yards, as when that was taken a roar fishtail began to make itself unpleasantly conspicuous and some good men fell by the wayside, while a couple of degrees left had been sufficient I windage at 300 -yards, ton and twelve weie I needed at the 500 yards, alternating from ' side to side sometimes for several successive 1 shots. i After lunch the sky was overcast, and the I wind dropped for a time, allowing some men j to get on good hits. The men, however, struck more puzzling puffs in the Canterbury match, in which only two possibles were scored, both in the 300 yards of the opening match, by James (Napier) ana Swanson (Karori). James kept his end up and finished well, but Swanson found the going too heavy. If. J. King (Opaki), an ox-champion, was one who had a hard luck shoot. He came to the 600 yards with two 34’s, and had only to got 30 to win from Carter (Potone). He fell fonl of a fishtail, and enuld only notch 27 after working hard, as only an old stager knows how to do. Eighteen teams entered for tho Rifle (duo Champion Teams’ Match. The teams, which comprise five men, are:—l ctone, Opaki, Wanganui, Kaiapoi, Akarana, Linkwator, Greytown, \\ aihi, Linton (two), Tuamarina, Karori (two), Okawa .
