PREPARED FOR TRANSMISSION BY TELEORAPH BY OUR MELBOURNE CORRESPONDENT. ■February 21. 1863. Ship Kulnsoff, from California, arrived at Sydney, dates 24th December. News from the seat of war says General Burnside assumes the responsibility of moving across the Rappahannock at Fredericksburg. The official returns of the losses in the late engagement at Fredericksburg state that the Fcderals lost 1128 .killed, 9003 wounded, and 2030 missing; while the Cbnfedo ales are said to have lost 2500 killed and wounded. 'lhe Confederates were defeated at_ Kingston, North Carolina, by General Forster.

TUAPEKA TO VVAKATIPU. OVER TITK HILLS TO THE MOLTNEUX. J am rather inclined to believe that the sun was well over the yard-arm when we started from Tuapoka. Burns, in one of his letters, describes tho whiskey in his neighbourhood as “a most rascally liquor; and, as a consequence, only drunk by the most rascally part of the inhabitants.” The same may bo said of much of the vile rubbish that is consumed in Otago; but I am con-' strained to declare that at the dreary township of Lawrence there are some very joliy people who keep excellent whiskey and know how to use it. . . Of course it rained, it always rains at Tuapoka, and of course it blew, it never ceases to blow. A Temple of the winds might fitly bo set up anywhere in that region. . . _ , C 5.
