ODDFELLOWS
The monthly meeting of the South Otago District Lodge, 1.0.0. F., was held on Thursday, February 22. Reports were received from lodges in regard to space required in tho new issue of the handbook, a committee being formed to publish the thirteenth edition. Several brothers attended to receive the second degree, which, was conferred by Degree Master Ripley and assistants. A visit was received from Bro. Whitmore, P.D.D.G.M., of Southland, who spoke of affairs in connection with the order in the North Island, he having just completed a tour of that part of the jurisdiction. The election of officers for the ensuing 12 months was /held, as also was the election of a D.D.G.M. for the term of two years. Bro. Chas. Bolton, P.G., of Unity Lodge, was the only nominee for the position of D.D.G.M., and his name will go forward to the Grand Master for appointment. Tho usual meeting of Leith Lodge was held on February 19. There was a good attendance of members and representatives from sister lodges. Routine business was despatched early, and the lodge handed over to Grand Treasurer L. Deans Ritchie, who supervised a mock Grand Lodge session.
Unity Lodge held a very successful meeting on Monday, February 12, N.G. Bro. J. Shore presiding over a fair attendance of members. A notification form the District Secretary was received, reminding members of the next district meeting, when the second degree will be conferred. During the evening two candidates were initiated into the lodge. It was resolved to invite the officers and members of Leith Lodge to take charge of the next meeting. The visitors' toast was responded to by P.G. Bro. Glover (Linden Lodge). Bro. A. E. Wilkinson presided over a fairly good attendance of members and visiting brethren at the Linden Lodge meeting on February 21. The business was chiefly of a routine nature, but some discussion arose anent the supply of handbooks,, and the question was eventually referred to a committee for consideration. The Syllabus Committee's report directed attention to a number of special social fixtures, including a Scotch night, mock election, impromptu concert, children’s night, and other attractions. Two candidates were initiated, and the transfer of a member from Hereweka Lodge was notified. Leave of absence was granted to the N.G., who intends visiting several North Island lodges. Bro. J. Skinner, D.D.G.M., welcomed the nowyl-initiated brethren.
