A crowd of 160 folk journeyed to Wingatui Racecourse last Saturday morning to enjoy tho day picnicking. They represented tho staff of Messrs Arthur Barnett (Ltd.). Friend and relatives were present also at the invitation of Mr Arthur Barnett, who provided, free of charge, all railway tickets. Numbers of commercial travellers, representing the local warehouses, journeyed out by trains arid motor car. The racecourse proved an admirable and convenient ground for the purpose, plenty of shelter and accommodation being available when the odd showers of rain made it advisable to seek cover for a few minutes. The young children wore catered for by a special committee, who arranged races, distributed fruit, sweets, and various small articles treasured by the “kiddies” at such outings. A regular programme of races and sports was arranged by the Sports and Entertainment Committee. The following events tested the proficiency of those competing: 'Barnett Handicap, 220yds. —-O. Symon 1, J. Barnett 2; 120yds (open handicap), J. Barnett 1, C. Symons 2; married men’s race', L. Butterfield; married ladies’ race, Mrs Harvey 1, Mrs Docherty 2; men’s walk (i.’pnl. J. Wilson 1. R. Wix 2, with ,a special third for (J. Jackson; ladies’ walk (440yds). Miss Peters 1. Miss Roy 2; builders’ race (for men engaged on new showroom construction). Morton 1. Blagdon 2; ladies’ handicap. Miss Edwards 1. Miss Orr 2. A championship race of 220yds was arranged between teams chosen from Arthur Barnett (Ltd.) and Messrs J. and W. Faulkner's ]>icnio party, and was won In’ E. T. Ohirnsido and C. Symons, of Barnett’s. Heath's Orchestra provided excellent music throughout the afternoon, and dancing freely indulged in at intervals. —Christmas puddings in England. h.ic.h cost 3s Id in 1913, worked out at about 7b 6d in 1922.
