The Scottish Rugby Union has purchased for £40,000 a ground at Murran Fields, Edinburgh, for international matches. Accommodation will be provided for 70,000 spectators. It will be the largest Rugby ground in Britain. —A. and N.Z. Cable, THE LAWTON CASE. LONDON, January 28. (Received Jan. 29, at 8.5 p.m.) Lawton's case continues to excite interest in Rugby circles. “Touch Judge,” writing in Sporting Life, says the case was not reported to the Rugby Union by the university or Major Stanley, but by a representative of the club who is violently antagonistic to the idea of overseas players bein'? included in the English game. “Touch Judge” demands an immediate decision in regard to the suspension, especially after the discourteous treatment the Australasian Unions allege they have received from the English Union recently.—A. and N.Z. Cable. [A cable message published a few days ago stated that the Australian Press Association learns that the Rugby Union discussed the status of Lawton (Rhodes scholar for Queensland), despite a protest by some members against- dealing with the subject in the absence of Mr L. G. Brown, the Australian representative, who is on holiday in Switzerland. Mr AVray, the Now Zealand representative, refused to vote on the question, and declared that he was not fully informed regarding the facts owiug to Mr Brown’s absence. The union’s decision at this stage was most surprising, as the authorities had been fully aware during the past two years of Lawton’s technical infraction of the union’s rules in Australia, while when Lawton first arrived both the secretary of the union and Major Stanley (Oxford’s representative) definitely declared that Lawton’s minor breach of the rules would not

bo raised, as it was not desired to have friction with the dominions over such a trifle. The Morning Post says that Lawton's suspension is , temporary, pending the of the commission which the Rugby Union appointed to inquire into the whole question of tho relations between the Australian controlling body , and .the Rugby. Union on the varying views regarding professionalism.] LAWN TENNIS ■ AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. (Pee United Peess Association.) AUCKLAND, January 29.
